For the nerds among you:
The seccond method is simply a result of how photoshop handles colors and values.
If photoshop would allow negative values, method 1 would actually work for the seccond picture aswell
With negative values, i mean colors that are darker than black.
the only reason it doesnt work is because in the second picture the subject picture was lighter than the refrence image
If we use the first equasion for this: refrence - subject, the resulting value would be a negative value.
It would be like doing 1 - 2 which equals -1
Since photoshop doesnt allow for these values darker than black, it will default to black (0 in this case)
If photoshop would allow negative values, the first method would work perfectly
Because we all know from our 6th grade math that adding a negative number to a positive one results in a subtraction
for instance: (2) + (-1) = 1 ( the addition becomes a subtraction because youre adding a negative number)
So the linear dodge(add) blendmode would also result in a subtraction, which would give you the same result as with the second method, just with one workaround fewer: )

Wow. This tutorial blew my mind. It makes total sense. I was looking for a repeatable method to match skin tones of the same model in different scenes. And this solves the problem.
However! : Here is the challenge: Could this be automated somehow? Let's say I have a number of deliverable photos (say 200 pictures) of a subject in different settings under different lighting conditions. I want the skin tones of my deliverables to match. Ideally, I would like to determine one photo as the master and then have photoshop go through each of the other photos, create the mask over the skin, do the match and create the subtraction layer, etc. Anyone willing / able to create a solution for this? Unmesh? Adobe?

This is brilliant. This is the best explanation of how the transparency modes work. I've always thought of it as mathematical in some way, but I could never zero-in on understanding it in 'logial statements like this. ' Now it make more sense.
