I'm trying to get it through to her that you single-handedly (or however many-handedly it takes for PiXimperfect ) provide a springboard to most of the successful elements in my photoshop workflow. Guys, for smaller areas, you can quite easily make do with this WAY quicker method: Pick an average blue colour from the trainer, make a new layer with a blend mode of 'color' and paint over affected area. 10 times less hassle, and very nearly as good. Of course, Unmesh's version provides perfection.

It worked through the lasso-to-average color blurs. but when I went to create a gradient map from that layer, the entire gradient is white (no black. The original subject is navy blue, similar to the one used in the video, so I'm confused as to what went wrong.

In the gradient map, you should have the pure black and pure white at both end. That should make the color more accurate.
This will fix colors in the shadow (since shadow needs to be less saturated) and give the shoes bit more texture.

Unmesh I would love to see a creation of an action to change exact clothes colours using math, you could separate them in 3 action (0 to 33%, 33% to 66% and 66% to 100 %. Manually is really really waste of time.

What is the difference with de Camera Raw option denoise of color. With this option the purple discoloration can also be fixed.

Pretty dope tutorial. Not sure if I'm the only one though. but I feel as though the discoloration adds to the material a bit. Perhaps a 60% color modification and combine the two. :D

I know you're Photoshop focused but if you use Capture One Pro to develop your raw files, theres a specific set of tools to fix such discoloration in a few seconds.

Just go to camera raw filter details and go to color noise reduction. Increase detals and increase color noise reduction. No need to do this.
