Pushing to Failure Pt. 2 - Flex Friday (Squats) I agree with everything you said Brian, except going to failure on squats. As a natural athlete you should not go to failure on any compound movement such as benchpress, squat, or deadlift. My reason are because firstly when you go to failure, there is form breakdown as your CNS is trying to put your body in a position to recruit other muscles to be able to continue going. With such a heavy weight on your traps when doing a squat the last thing you want is form breakdown. Secondly, if you have form breakdown it could led to faulty recruitment patterns when your body will remember and mimic the broken down form and could use it when reps get difficult in the future. You would want your body to know no other form than correct form. Last it impedes recovery for the days to come, especially as a natural athlete, which could hamper progress for the future workouts to come. However i do agree with you 100% on going to failure on all other lifts than bench, squat, and deadlift.

i can completely understand where you're coming from brian. obviously if you are solely a STRENGTH athlete, practicing an extremely regimented program and following regulation of weights reps sets etc, failure is not beneficial. HOWEVER, if you're the average guy wanting to look better, should you be so cautious not to over train? Hell no! if you go to school or work a desk job all day and go intense in the gym for an hour you most likely won't over tax yourself. the problem is people these days lack DRIVE. how many dudes do you see moping around commercial gyms treating their workout like a tender little baby? Lift hard, utilize failure sets, focus on pace and intensity, work in strength for compounds, eat, and get results! enough of this Oh well my program only has me doing this i don't want to over do it if you aren't a powerlifter/competing then get your ass in the gym and crush the weights

Shredded bro! Nice symmetry too. I hear where you're coming from. push hard. test your limits. Some of us define failure differently as well. some think of fatigue as failure while others think of failure as mechanical. where you can no longer lift. Most people think of failure in terms of the concentric portion of the lift. but you still have some eccentric strength left. and that's where a spotter comes in.
All in all. this video just shows the beauty of the YouTube fitness community coming together and helping each other out. Well done.

Awesome vid! Question, when I go to failure I find myself getting so much more sore the next day. Since I'm doing lohilo, should I be aiming at failure on the strength days to really max out the weights and reps? And also is there anything I can do to get over the soreness to get at the next workout? Thanks brah! LIFT HEAVY OR DIE 'MIRIN!

I kinda wanna add my 2 cents. I think the big compound movements like squat, deadlift, bench, OHP, should be paced with low reps and then as the isolation or accessory movements, they should be higher rep and intense, low rest times.

I didn't think your last video was misleading, but I can see how some of us thought so. Glad you put out this video to clear things up. And HOT DAMN them legs; !

I don't think there is an ideal physique, it's all subjective and what is an ideal physique for some people might not be for another.
