Can't count how many times I nearly snapped my shit using barbells. I prefer dumbbells because of the safety net being much larger whilst still being able to continuously load more weight. Also I noticed you can actually alter the muscles used to an extent for some dumbbell workouts when progressively overloading your dumbbells i. e when doing dumbbell rows if the front end is slightly heavier (2. 5kgs or 5kgs heavier) it will use more of the bicep and forearm whereas having the back end uses more of the lats and rear delt. Completely bro science based though and I will know it's not the way to go when I snap some shit up in the near future.

I never use either EXCEPT FOR SQUATS. The close grip palms up pulldown or pull up is the GREAT biceps and back exercise bar none. The Dip is the greatest Chest shoulder and triceps exercise. So barbells and dumbells are redundant here for me.
Were I to do a barbell bench press though. I would do them between a power rack with spotters in place. So no need to fear going to failure. And the weight collapsing on you.

also, I can take 3 different pairs of dumbbells and a bench in the gym, and train supersets or circle training for 45 min without having to wait, spend time changing plates, wait for a machine, etc. As an older man above 50, this is nice.

Dumbbells work the lower body just as well as the barbell with the right lower body dumbbell exercise selection. When building muscle it isn't always about how heavy you go but is about progressive overload.

Dumbbells can become dangerous when you get stronger in your chest presses. You can throw out a shoulder pretty nasty and don't forget how tough it is to pop the weight up when you're on the bench.

Some gyms don't have any barbells. most beginners head right over to the dumbbell rack. developing bad habits of using bad form. then they use Olympic bars with bad form. bad form is never corrected!

I like barbells in general for ease of micro loading using 0. 5 kg plates. with dumbbells you have to jump 2 kg each side every time which is a big jump once you reach an intermediate stage

I used to have this debate my first 5 years of training. I find it best to do both switching every week.
Week1 - Barbell
Week2 - Dumbbell
Week3 - Barbell
Week4 - Dumbbell

Using the bar for incline press (and imagineing a vertikal fist on your chest to where the bar path is suppose to stopp) is much better for your shoulders, according to my education

You can buy dumbbell connectors these days, so no need to choose. I also used to use a chest high corner wall in my garden as a free squat rack and pillows on the floor as a bench.
