Hello, My name is Herb.
I am a 62 yr. old, married man, and prior service Army veteran.
I am researching areas to relocate and move to, in the S/E United States.
We have been in West Texas for 30+ years and its time for a change.
We have some family in the North Carolina Area as well.
Is there anything you can tell me about your area or town(s)
that you think we would need to know?
The good & the bad areas or towns, crime, rental homes, V. A. clinic/Hospital in that area or not. Large cities is definitely a no go. :)
I played music for 30 years so any concert or entertainment information in that area would also be of interest to me.
Any information you share would be greatly appreciated.
God bless and thank you for your assistance,
Herb: )

As someone who has lived in six Southeastern states and has lived here most of my life, I'll emphasize one important point: My list of places that I would recommend for a three-day tourist visit would be very different from my list of places to recommend for living during working years, retiring, or going away to college. For example Charleston SC is amazing to visit because it's a unique place and has a lot to see. I lived there for two years. It was OK, but I can think of ten places just in the Carolinas where I would rather live but that aren't as interesting for a vacation.

As an American Southerner, some of these places are quite familiar. I enjoyed Savannah, GA; the Blue Ridge Mts, where we lived; Memphis, for a short day trip; Roanoke, VA, where I lived--with the Blue Ridge Mts. surrounding; Richmond, VA, where I lived; Alabama, through which we traveled to Florida; Kitty Hawk, NC; Myrtle Beach, NC, which has Calabash's--tons of seafood! Overall, the South is polite and friendly, with some notable exceptions.

If you want to do something fun, interesting, and at your own pace: Follow the battlefields in NC from Mill Creek to Aversboro to Bentonville up to the Bennett House in Durham, and watch history unfold in front of you as you road trip through the tumultuous final days of the Civil War. Just remember to check for closing times and that the museums/battlefield are closed on Sundays.

Though I do agree, Florida, and Virginia can seem like its own thing, there are some other places I would add to the list that do count as Southern in my book if people want the full tour. I highly recommend DeLand, Florida, Staunton, Virginia, and Charlottesville VA. Could be a great excursion if you are doing a Disney trip or DC.

New Orleans is WAY BETTER THAN SAVANNAH, and Savannah IS DANGEROUS AS HELL, just like New Orleans, other than downtown, Savannah is dangerous and ghetto as shit, still worth checking out. I do like Savannah

Virginia is where the mid atlantic and south meet, kentucky and west virginia are where the South and midwest meet and Texas and Oklahoma and arkansas are where the South and West meet.
