I dont think Americans understand the european way of going to a restaurant.
Its all about privacy and having a good time with your friends or family not with the waiter. The waiter respects your privacy and the time you want to spend with your family. When Europeans go the a restaurant its not particular about the food. of course food is a part but its more about spending time with your loved ones. Thats probably why we stay longer even after everybody ate their dishes. Thats why we dont want to be disturbed. Europeans and Americans just have a different meaning of being polite and friendly.
I only can speak for Europeans, I think that is more polite to give your customers space and help them if they want you to. I dont want a waiter talking to me all the time while Im trying to spend time with family and friends. I know the person has good intentions but most Europeans are more discreet and when they need something from you they will be direct. Thats what we understand under a customer and a waiter/tress relationship.

I've had both, good and bad service in Germany. I guess the same for the US. Bear in mind that the wait staff does a lot more in Germany. They do the billing, cashier, etc. Unlike the US restaurants that usually have automated systems and a cashier. Most places in Germany will have a menu at the entrance, take a look while you wait to be seated, have an idea of what you want so you can order quickly. And yes, please learn the language, at least conversational, it will make a huge difference.

I love the service in the US. So friendly! I like to have some smalltalk, makes everything so much nicer. Even in an AT&T Store we were welcomed so personally. The guy said: Hey guys I'm David if you need any help feel free to ask for me.
Never happend here in Germany. It's not that we're unfriendly, but we have a different understanding of being nice. We don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable or stressed by asking every 2 Minutes if they're ready to order; )

Germany ruined my childhood. Grew up there, got mugged by the age of 6 and almost raped by 7, tried to tell my teacher and she literally sent me home for being a liar. Arrested my mom in front of me as a kid for doing laundry on a Sunday (work of any kind is illegal on Sundays) and one of my teachers actually punched my friend in the face for getting up during class. I live in the US now and my whole family is in therapy. German people: please improve.

People, listen, NO TIPPING is also rude in Germany. Germans gave tip too but in another way. U can tip as much u want. Maybe just 0, 20 Cents or 5 that depends on how u like ur meal, ur waitress, the location even how u feel today
BUT PLEASE DON'T THINK WAITRESSES DON'T NEED THE TIPS TOO HERE because often they are just students and just work to finance the college.
No tipping is rude BUT it's totally okay if ur service was miserable

In my Gerrman Culture, when in a restraunt and need a waiters attention to come to your table, all you do is use the spoon and gentle tap your plate. And if you would like to drink water, Restraunts serve water (sprudel-wasser) Basically our food is Beef, Pork, Duck, Rabbit. I have never hear of chicken served at our restraunts. This more likely is served in the USA. .my new home now. I love chicken and american hamburgers! yummy!

One hint: Places having signs that they only take ec Karte, maestro:
Very often MasterCard DEBIT and VISA DEBIT will work there. As it doesn't use the credit card application.
And for the ATM: NEVER TAKE YOUR US CREDIT CARD to get cash. Always use your MasterCard DEBIT or VISA DEBIT (one of those is typically your checking account card from your US bank) as this will not result in cash advance transaction.

Tip: don't walk around with 200 or 500 bills in your pocket, because it will be hard to break them, unless you are buying something expensive. When exchanging money at the bank, tell them you want smaller bills. We ran into such an issue with a 500, it was a big problem, luckily local tourist bureau folks helped us out and found a local internet caffe whose owner was willing to break the bill.

Ive noticed ppl love speaking English but I can speak German. Ive found in German Restaurants the Service staff are freindly by move quicker than America. Ive noticed that u have to state a double bed in a double room in a German hotel. Ive heard ppl moan bout Germans in Germany. Some Germans kno Spanish as Spain is a popular tourist destination for Germans.

I just recently went back to Germany. My US bank card has the Visa logo on it. It works pretty much on all ATMs. With the card coming out before or after transaction, it's set however the bank wants to. I've seen both in the US. Like PNC hands it out after, others give the card back right away.
