Hi Mark. I would welcome advice on tipping, which I hate and find embarrassing and patronising, but I also want to do the right thing by the worker. Who to, how much, how to do it in as inoffensive a way as possible? For instance, if a cab is $7. 80, do you round up and look a bit mean, or add extra, but what if you don't have change, do you tell the driver to take extra? I'm sorry to go on about this at length, but worrying about tipping does actually spoil my enjoyment of travelling. Wouldn't it be great if everyone just told you the fair price for their services and you just paid it? Travel books and sites are often contradictory on this, but your stuff is always interesting and authoritative and I would trust your judgement. Am I the only one who worries about this?

If you have an unlocked phone, you can just buy a SIM-card in your destination country. You have to make sure that your phone is network-unlocked, otherwise you won't be able to use it. For example, I bought a phone in China last year and it works fine in Hungary. No problems yet. Warranty is expired, because I have been using it for over a year. This year, I travelled to Portugal and I used MEO there. For that 2 months I had 2GB of data, 500 mins of calls, 500 messages in Portugal, for 10 euros. Phoning abroad was 15 cents per minute. I hardly used this latter function. I almost always had free Wi-Fi, so I just messaged on Facebook, because it did not count in that 2GB.

Hola Walter! I plan on taking my first trip abroad to Barcelona, Spain to volunteer for a week as an English tutor. This will be my first serious trip anywhere outside of Texas (my home state. I am extremely excited but at the same time extremely uncertain about traveling alone as a female. So my question being, how safe is it for a female traveler to roam free and possibly backpack through Europe? I know for a fact that I want to extend my stay, but I feel restraint by the fact that I would travel alone and possibly stay in hostels. I appreciate any advice and tips you may have. Im a big Fan! Thanks!

Hey, Mark, I was in Milano, too, in March, and there was a large protest that went past La Scala and congregated in the square in front of the Duomo. What was it about? There were many children there and people held signs for various schools and institutes. One guy was burning some paper that emitted a lot of purple smoke, and people danced around him in a circle, linking arms. People also made speeches and some people (children, I think, given their high-pitched voices) were also singing. I'd guess it had something to do with education. Do you know what that was?

I never use my phone while traveling outside the US. I just go on my iPad or laptop use the wifi at the hotel and FaceTime home and/or post pictures. When i was in Scotland and Ireland i had my cell phone turned off and in my luggage didn't turn it on until i landed back in the US. As far as the money it is best to use the ATM because some places didn't want to accept credit cards and i found it easier to just to have the cash on me.

Regarding the money, that was my original plan, but finally decided going mostly cash for this time at least because of the exchange rate I have at home.
My case is a little different. I need to exchange from Mexican pesos and right now I can buy Euros for roughly more than the U. S. Dollar. That way I don't need to deal with ATM or Credit Card exchange rates in regular basis. It's worse for me those bank charges: (

Do you have any travel suggestions or insights about access ability for those who are disabled? Particularly blind and visually impaired individuals. My goal is to teach English in Germany after I've finished college. I've visually impaired and will most likely have my second guide dog by them. Any info, suggestions, or tips would be great. I love your videos they're always so informative and fun to watch.

Perhaps one thing that could be mentioned is never to accept dynamic currency conversion when using your credit card abroad. In other words, if the merchant gives you a choice on whether to charge your card in your home currency or the local currency, you should always pick the local currency, as your bank's conversion rate is almost always better than that of the merchant.

Heck, we were at a baseball game in Baltimore, MD when the protests over the Freddie Grey verdict came out. There were giant protests because the kids were turned off the school buses at the central transportation hub, because there was a rumor that they WERE going to protest. In an attempt to stop the protests, the city CAUSED the protest.

Don't be afraid to attend demostrations in Denmark. The police is quite fair compared to the U. S and even if the police arrest you - there is a chance you will get some money out of it if the arrest was wrong. I got around 3500 danish crowns for being detained 3 hours.
