Im an Atlanta native my family has been here for generations and I must say in the last 5 to 10 years my wonderful city has changed drastically for the worst. People have started to come here in larger amounts than ever and wherein when people would move to Georgia they would live in the suburbs now they are coming to the city. I just wonder whats bringing all these people here in record amounts. Its like the California gold rush but this time its Georgia and people are looking for fame.
Traffic used to be predictable and avoidable but now its always traffic and there is just so many people here.
We used to have amazing southern hospitality. A person wouldnt pass another person with out speaking, most people were kind, respectful and helpful but now there is so much rudeness, disrespect, bashing, etc.
Yes we used to have crime but it wasnt a lot and only happened in certain neighborhoods. Now the crime rate is up so much that if the numbers werent shared I wouldnt believe it. Things happen so often and it happens any and everywhere. Its really scary and when I hear people thats planning to move here say they want to live in s good safe neighborhood my first thought/response is that theres no such thing here anymore. This stuff happens anywhere and in every neighborhood and its ridiculous.
The driving as Ive said southern hospitality was very real here in Atlanta ga before so many people started coming here from everywhere and it includes driving. There werent many accidents most drivers would follow the rules or laws and just be fair. Thats no longer the case our annual roadway fatalities have jump up 300%, you cant leave home and go anywhere without seeing or hearing about a car accident. Im so tired of hearing people say those Atlanta people are some crazy drivers. Yall have it wrong its all these people that keep coming here and arent from here that are the crazy drivers.
The next thing is our Atlanta history and housing availability. So we have so much history here in Atlanta but due to the extreme influx of people coming here now our history mostly gets torn down and erased to make more room to build these luxury and really expensive condos. Any little empty space now gets condos thrown up quickly. Also if a family wanted to move there used to be plenty of choices now everything is mostly full and have waiting lists. Affordable housing and low income housing is disappearing and the city is focusing only on housing for the rich driving so many natives out of the only homes theyve ever known. Its so scary and I just wonder where are us non rich atl natives supposed to go.
As for renters they have made it so hard to qualify and get a rental home. Example one new restriction is that your income has to be three times the rent price which wont be the case for a lot of people. Weve always had homeless people here but never this many ( believe me it started before covid) and it shouldnt be this way. Im almost sure at least half the people thats homeless in Atlanta now its because they dont meet the strict requirements in place now to get a home.
Resources like food, bill and financial assistance etc people used to be able to get help but now these organizations are always out of funds, have waiting lists or you cant get through to anyone due to high call volumes.
One more problem I see is there not being enough supply for this amount of people. At doctors offices you used to be able to get same or next day appointments now with some doctors you have to wait months. For people with several chronic illnesses like myself thats a real problem that causes unnecessary worry and can even be life threatening. Ive noticed that so many schools have to have several trailers in order for there to be enough classrooms. The stores and restaurants cant keep items/products in stock its just not enough for everyone ( example restaurants rarely ever used to run out of things like say ketchup or straws but it has now become the norm.
Its a really bad and believe it or not dangerous situation here in Atlanta Georgia due to the extreme influx of people moving here. This many people in one city is just a disaster waiting to happen.

As someone who lives in Atlanta I think this video was great! Definitely agree with everything in it. Id also add a couple things I havent seen other people mention:
1) the beltline was briefly touched on in this video but its absolutely one of the must do things if youre visiting atlanta and have some time. If you walk down it there are great views of the city and great bars and restaurants to stop at. Usually events too
2) Piedmont park/botanical garden - also great views of the city, always events going on, and generally pretty.
3) restaurants - he definitely touched on the most famous/touristy restaurants here but I think there are better. Atlanta magazine puts out a list of the best restaurants and it doesnt miss. Dont be afraid to drive a little farther to go to one bc it will be worth it

Ppl hear literally Marched with MLK (because hes from here, you can visit his museum (its down the street from Jimmy Carters Library.
Buckhead. You guessed it BLACK AF. (Go a bit further up North to Alpharetta to start seeing a bit less Black.
So even tho there wasnt a single Black Establishment or mention of African American culture in this video (yeah, thanks for mentioning the African art at the High Museum, just note if youre not into Black Culture youll need to stay outside of 285 or just not come.

Lived here my entire life. Manuals Tavern is a good bar with good grub that has been around forever. The Vortex has great burgers. Mary Mac's tearoom is good but has an old lady vibe. The Fox theater is a great venue for a show. Little 5 points is still cool even though WAY more commercialized than the old days. Sweetwater beer is brewed here and is very good. Carry a firearm if you are able as there is way more crime than just cars getting broken into. Violent crime is pretty high (look it up) but you'll know if you're in a sketchy part and downtown touristy places are pretty safe. Marta (public transit) sucks honestly. But it really is a fun city with the best strip clubs. Go checkout the Clermont Lounge!

Im a long time inside the perimeter (ITP) resident. Since 1984. Realtor. I love all our quirky and cool neighborhoods. Best way to think of ATL is it is a bunch of villages. All with unique characteristics. Perfect example: Oakhurst is part of City of Decatur. Yet feels nothing at all like downtown. Ditto Ormewood and Grant Park. Next to each other. Completely different vibe. Love this city with all my heart.

As someone who was a teenager when I lived in Gwinnett County, I believe I became a great driver faster because I was immediately thrown into the Atlanta metro traffic. Had to learn how to handle some of the completely insane things that only happen there, like traffic suddenly stopping to grab money that flew out of the back of an armored truck.

Misplaced
I was born in Atlanta in the middle of the last century! This is a very fair description of this city. Make sure you brush up on your city geography to know where you're going. Atlanta is a very difficult city to get around in. There are a lot of great sites and so-forth, but like this YouTuber guide says, it is a very spread out city. Enjoy.

I'd say unless you know exactly where you're going. Atlanta is not safe after dark.

I'm a 50 year old lifetime Atlantan.
It's getting very dangerous.
The current mayor caters to criminals rather than standing behind law enforcement.
