ST. HILARION CASTLE - Kyrenia Harbour Darwinsmom: What a wonderful adventure you had! My Dad was among the second Canadian contingent of Peaceeepers who went over to Cyprus in 1965. He made some lasting and profound friendships while he was there, and we ended up going to visit in 1971 as a family. It was such an enchanting experience I will never forget it or the people.
One of my favourite memories from that trip was in a little restaurant facing Kyrenia Harbour. We had Meza - a seemingly endless parade of small dishes that featured so much variety and so many vibrant flavours that I still drool when I think about the experience. Our hotel in Kyrenia showcased rooms that overlooked the ocean, although we were not exactly on the coast. When my Dad explained that the land we saw across the water a loooong way away was actually Turkey! If the air was clear enough it was common to see the coast so far away.
When we made our way to either St. Hilarion Castle or Bellapais Abbey (sorry, can't recall which, but I was only 11 at the time( as we climbed to the higher elevations, we found a little food kiosk in the middle of nowhere. It was set up in a trailer that was probably no longer used for travel because the axles were there, but no wheels! We had luscious chunks of perfectly char-cooked lamg served on a fluffy fresh pita. The interesting bit was that when it was time to assemble out order, the woman passed a little boy a plastic colander. He dutifully scoured the hillside for perfect fresh greens. The woman washed them, shook them mostly dry, and sprinkled them generously on the sandwiches. I have never tasted anything that scrumptious since.
The hotel we stayed in was in Kyrenia, and I think it was called the Mandarin Hotel. The hotelier's wife cooked for guests and she made the most sublime clear mushroom broth. I practically begged for it every might at dinner, and they were kind enough to comply. I think the hotel was blown up in 1974 during a period of increased tensions on the island.
Quick advisory to foolish children lucky enough to visit the island and relish in the beaches like Six Mile Beach near Kyrenia, yes, the sea urchins you see in the shallow water are alive. No, you cannot bring them home to keep as pets. This I found out the VERY hard way! By the time we arrived back at our home in Germany (Dad was stationed there as a soldier) my -pets- had crossed the river Styx and their decomposing remains made anything in my suitcase unsalvageable!
If anyone has the chance to visit this exquisite country and its food, culture, people and museums, please do not let anything hold you back. Today I am a 60 year old woman with extensive memories of a place and a people I could never forget! Thank so much for triggering some of my most treasured memories from my childhood!

Nice video guys.
For your next vlog why don't you set-up a prank where someone kicks you and your entire family (no, no, let's make it 1/3rd of your entire country for maximum impact) out of your homes and moves in, takes over your property, possessions, your irreplaceable family treasures, your photo albums, your clothes, your money, your cars, your bicycle, your school photos, your first swimming medal, your guitar, your record collection, EVERYTHING! - that could be a blast right? And wouldn't it be cool if we go all out and make this prank last for, let's see - 43 years, 2 months and 16 days with no end to the prank in sight!
Please do a little research before your next -travel guide-.

i just can't with the Turkish and turkish-cypriot flags so prominent hanging there. it's just so painful. i hope you guys had a great time but i also hope you tried to learn a bit of the history of the place you visited and had so much fun in. Just imagine someone who's home is Kerinia (yeah this is the right name) watching this video knowing he can't go back there. To that beautiful place he once called home cause Turkey decided it was theirs to take

If the entire world had Amnesia for history, and just be good human beings, the world would be a better place. history takes us back to bad places and get us all rooted there to get involved in more negative things. Start fresh and enjoy scenery, cultures, people, food like K and N.

You went to the north part of Cyprus which is occupited since 1974 from turkish military. This side of the island is not recognized from any country in the world because of the millions of violations Turkish military have made. Please learn some history before travelling.

I had to stop after the -turn around-. I am laughing so hard. Kara is out of the car directing and then bends over to the camera and states -pew. that was stressful-. this is like driving up to -The Base Camp-. On Everest. This is Great.

Has anybody told you that these places are occupied by turks since 1974? Has anybody told you that -north- cyprus is not recognized by no one because they are illegal? I believe you have no idea about history and what you are doing
