I remember that final ascent that started at 11 PM. Steep and sudden cold when at the top. Several people were puking from altitude sickness. We wanted to get off the summit so fast, we hardly took more than a couple pictures. We descended that whole mountain too before we camped and were picked up the next morning. That weather you had was crazy. very tough luck. Sounds like you had the early signs of HAPE too. Good call to get out of there.

A brave choice. I too went up but made it to the top not without some water on my lungs (at age 60 in 2008. You didn't mess up. Altitude sickness is no joke.
I'm doing some marketing as a favour for Baba Kilimanjaro. I'm sure you'll want to use Nelson again, though. Such a huge expedition takes some managing. Taking 100 people up is also no joke! Well done for your brave choice.

I heard a story about an attempt on Kilimanjaro where one guy had his own porta-potty carried up the mountain by a porter. Well, the guy was a little bunged up during the ascent but the call of nature returned with a vengeance near the summit. Let's just say that the air-pressure inside the porta-potty hadn't been equalized throughout the ascent. ..

I had a similar altitude sickness experience hiking Salcantay in Peru. Elevation was about 15, 000 feet. Flew into Cusco from Maryland (sea level) and hiked Salcantay two days later, no diamox or any altitude meds. Two days after the hike, I was in the hospital getting treated for altitude sickness.

Serious and dangerous situation, great you got through it.
Same happened to a friend climbing Kilimanjaro.
Why not spend more and take a private tour? Could get better shots and more personal takes with the guides. Not to mention more peace with the surrounding nature.

That is what it feels like to have COVID. It has been 7. 5 months since I had it, and my oxygen isn't 100%. Hiking this summer for work was difficult and I had to be by myself, no field partner, because of the pandemic. Sorry you had that experience. Better to be safe.

There's nothing to be embarrassed about. Its biological and has nothing to do with one's ability. But yikes, I hated this kind of circus hikes! I rather to watch your other solo hikes without any words.

Hi Kraig. I'm sorry to hear about not making summit. I'm doing some research and I was wondering in terms of general fitness, would you say that you are someone who is pretty good at endurance activity?
