You mentioned experimenting without carrying a heating element. There is a company called Omeals that actually has the heating element contained in the foil pack. All you have to do is add water. They have pastas, chicken with rice and different soups. I wouldnt call it gourmet but its pretty tasty and as I dont hike with a stove. its worked pretty well for me.

Re: stoves: Have you tried the alcohol stove set ups? The fancy feast variants? I like my tomcat a lot. Its safe and miserly on fuel with the felt liner compared with straight up pour in styles, but Im still searching for the right fuel container and amount of alcohol fuel to bring on trips. I like the light compact cook set, and the quiet burns.

I did 6 weeks on the Pyrenees a few years back and didn't take a stove. Just ate raw food and really pigged out when I passed through a town. Lower pack weight made the trip much less effort.

Calories per ounce folks! What food will give me the most calories in the least amount of weight? Calorie dense, doesn't take up tons of room in your pack, easy to fix.

I do like ramen with tuna! But now I buy the fancier one at the Asian market: the broth is 10 times better and make the whole meal much nicer.
