I had to fly out to Unalaska for work a few years ago and it was one of my least favorite flights! Not because of the airline, because they kept us fed and snacked, but because we flew 4 hours out there and made one approach and then turned back and went the entire 4 hours back to Anchorage. And then do it again the next day and hear all the locals tell us that it had been a beautiful day yesterday and cleared up about 20 minutes after our landing was averted.

I loved this video! I watched every episode of Deadliest Catch since 2005. When I read the title, I thought of the Aleutian Islands and was very happy to see that I was correct. I always wanted to go there, but was never brave enough, so thank you for this video. The only thing you missed was the bar, The Rat, where the fishermen got wasted drinking 'duck farts' when in port. I noticed that wrecked plane on the ground while you were landing YIKES

Great vlog Noel and to mention a few things Obviously ConocoPhillips is a company that operates gas rigs of I go to Norwich airport they operate to gas rigs in the North Sea and obviously Dutch harbour is famous for the tv series deadliest catch and the film The Perfect Storm featuring George clooney about a real life fishing boat called the Andrea Gail that sank and killed all on board but more like this plz

So many memories when seeing the Saab 2000, thank you for that! I used to fly with them a lot from Lugano to Zurich and Geneva, in Switzerland. I was also lucky enough to experience a jumpseat flight on a Saab.
This plane type has quite a history in Switzerland: first flying for Crossair, then Swiss, then followed by Darwin and Etihad Regional. And from Bern with Skywork. Such a shame they were phased out.

Unalaska/Dutch Harbor was the last U. S. stop on a repositioning cruise on Viking last September. I spent some time next to the airport in the smallish WWII museum overlooking the runway. I watched one of the Aleutian Airlines planes land & take off. (and I have a long-sleeve t-shirt as a souvenir of that visit) Unalaska was briefly taken over by the Japanese at the start of that war.

Kia ora Noel. Fascinating video. Dutch Harbor also has some interesting W. W. 2. history as the Japanese bombed it in June 1942 to divert American attention from their impending attack on Midway, and in support of their attack on the Aleutian Islands. It didn't work and the following day the Japanese lost four heavy carriers off the coast of Midway to some brilliant dive bombing.

Seeing the Saab 2000 brought back so many memories. I worked for the company that designed and built the interiors for the 340 and the 2000. So many happy memories of the all the people involved on the project, from our Swedish clients, the other designers and our super workforce on the floor. Keep up the great videos - always entertaining.

Years ago, Alaska Airlines used to fly B737-200C's (combi variant) into Dutch Harbor. The phase out of the 737-200s from their fleet and frequent cancellations due to weather at that airport led Alaska to farm out this route to the predecessor of Aleutian Airlines as a code share. But I bet it was a fun ride back in the day.

For future reference - Apple Maps lets you have offline maps - it's a bit of a hidden feature, but super handy! Lots of areas in NC without cell service, so I use the feature quite often!
Great video! What a gorgeous aircraft with such an amazing history! Looking forward to more Alaska aviation adventures from you!

Re: Crashed planes.
Many years ago, flew Continental to Cleveland. Upon landing, half way down the runway was an upside down 727 cargo plane between us and the taxi way. There were a few gasps when people saw it. The pilot said it crashed overnight, no one seriously injured. Never did hear what caused the crash.

reply

Considering how they made cut outs next to the runway, they seem to be replacements for hangars. So that plane might not be crashed. but just butchered for parts.
Or both. I don't know, it just seems rather silly to drag it to a cut out of the rocks and just leave it there.

i remember when i first flew into Alaska from Boston in 2023 i couldn't believe the view of the mountains outside of Anchorage and i also couldn't believe i actually made it especially since i had a long layover in Chicago and a 4 hour medical emergency stop in Calgary

Omg I love love LOVED this video Noel! I’ve wanted to go to the Aleutians for years, happy to vicariously do it through you! And your positioning of the loo reviews within your narrative is often funny-but today was HILARIOUS. Thanks Noel for sharing with us all!

I know there is this paradoxical place in Alaska called Unalaska (Un-alaska, but I don't know there is this place called Unalaska (U-na-laska)
ig I just pronounce this place wrong in all these years (but un-alaska is certainly funnier)

Noel, just to let you know, at the 20: 50ish mark you can see your drivers license fairly clearly. You might want to blur that out ASAP also the ticket as you're boarding the plane in Dutch Harbor shows more than you probably want to be seen.
reply

When you blurred out your wallet the blurred part stuck around annoying lol but welcome to Alaska hope you take the longest e175 flight Anchorage to Portland on Alaska then take the flight from California to Canada on an e2-190 porter

The lack of TSA probably has a lot to do with the fact that the large majority of passengers work on ships in the fishing industry. As seafarers, they have a federal card that among other things, allows them to circumvent TSA checks.
reply

I was gonna say you went there and didn't visit the harbor where deadliest catch is filmed How dare you! But then you did and I was like YAY! Sad that none of the boats were really there when you went, but still nice all the same!
reply

soon these will be ex Silver Airways ATRa too Noel!
In addition, these operate under part 135 likely with 30 seats max. Like JSX.
Wild Cat Touring is the other operator of a similar configuration. Aspen-Dallas/Houston

reply

There is a constant changing of names of operators on these Alaskan regional routes which leads to the conclusion that revenue is insufficent to clear costs with the result that some of them come down to the lower 48 states.
