I went there, as a day trip from Munich. 3 hours train trip (one way. Was TOTALLY worth it.
Rothenburg is already wonderful by day, but it's even more charming by night, when the tour crowds start going away and the old cobblestone streets start to get less crowded. I had the chance to experience it by night as I was there in late December and it was nightime as early as 5 PM. However if you go there in the summer, staying there one night is a good idea (and one night is enough - Rothenburg can be seen in a day.

Proudly served and stationed in Ansbach, Wuerzburg, Nuenburg. 92-95 and then again for a second tour 1997-2001. Living and working in Ansbach, Rothenburg was practically in my back yard. As many times as I went there, It always left a craving for me to know more about its history. It is truely a marvel of a city. Ich Liebe Deutchland.

just a correction, Rothenburg isn't a good place to buy Dirndls because that's the typical BAVARIAN costume. and Rothenburg is nowadays inside Bavaria modern bundesland, but it's not a part of bavaria but a part of Franconia (Franken. Just in case you don't know.

6000 einwohner ist net notig um ein Stadt zu geniessen, oder?

First visited Rothenburg in 1971. Hasn't changed a lot. Go late in the afternoon and visit the garden overlooking the Tauber river. Beautiful.

Frankfurt was actually one of the biggest german cities in the middleages. Before WW 2 it had the biggest half timbered old town of Europe.
