Bad Night in Cheapest Tent I Could Buy

I bought the cheapest tent I could and spent the night camping in the woods. It was raining during the night which meant the cheap tent got soaked! I was considering buying a relatively cheap double-layer tent with 2 doors (not the absolute cheapest, seam sealing it, waterproofing it, replacing the fake mesh with real mesh, replacing the cheap zippers with quality zippers, replacing the cheap fiberglass poles with aluminum poles, adding storage pockets and a ridge line (for hanging items like lights) to the mesh inner tent, and maybe even sewing an inner inner polyester tent (a second inner tent of fabric to go inside the inner tent of mesh) for extreme cold weather. Then I thought, since I'm doing all these modifications, I may as well make my own tent from scratch LOL.

I tell ya how to water proof a tent the easy way, but a 5 gallon bucket, get about 2 gallons of naphtha and 2-3 tubes of 100% silicon squeeze the silicon into the bucket of naphtha and stir it around with a stick until its mixed well and stuff the tent into the bucket (use a pair of heavy duty chemical gloves) once the tent is stuffed and stirred and completely saturated take it out and hang it on a line to dry. This can be used on any tent cheap or expensive, me thinks that would make that tent better than any other tent on the market today as far as water proofing goes.

I got a comparably cheap tent (about 25 USD) called the scout made by Stansport. It performed much better, and I used it for about 15 years or more. I did put one can of silicone spray on it when I first got it, though.
I never had any wet spots inside from the bottom (tarp bottom) or walls despite using it in heavy rain. Downsides, it was small, used 10 stakes, and the door flap had no zipper. The small window could only be opened from the outside.

The stove you have is the same one I got 4 years a go and it's the best of all the camping wood stove I have purchased. For the past 3 years it has sat out side all brown and rusty with heavy use. But whenever I need it, I fold it up put it in is bag and I know it will serve me well.

13: 49 would you be up for doing a video of cheap gear recomendations? I think that could be really helpful to new folk, as your videos were to me when I was starting out camping a few years ago. No price range, just stuff like zebra billy can, mora companion, dd 3x3 etc.

Cheaper still, just go for a walk around any woods (especially in Scotland) and you ll find at least one of these cheap tents that people use for a night and then leave behind. It really boils my pi that scummy people will carry it in and leave it behind.

To be fair a cheap little tent like this is really for kids to camp out in the back garden in the summer time. Not to take into the woods with you this time of the year. However I did enjoy the video. I liked the little cooler bag.

I like the pretty bow to finish it off
I camped out in my expense fjallraven Abisko on Saturday night, got really bad condensation even with all the vents open. although I did cook inside as the rain was like stair rods.

Hey Mike, loving your vids, keep em coming! Particularly liked your bushcraft survival hints and tips! What was that orange camping pump/light called that you used in this video? Thanks man!

This video has generated a question in my usually empty mind. is there an environmentally friendly way to dispose of a tent? Or any ideas as to how one may repurpose a tent?

Plenty of expensive gear turns out pretty poor these days too. Lots of brands who make a name based on good quality and then churn out cheap trash to make a big profit.

Nothing worse than wet camping. Unless it's cold too. Did you chuck it in the bin or save it for the kids to camp in the garden? Thanks for the fun vid Mike.

you got me back out in the woods after years. you should do a Lavu camp again! that was such a neat setup ide like to find one for myself at some point.

Always enjoy your videos. I paid more for my 10ft x 10ft (3x3m) midweight Redcamp tarp. It works great as a Plough point or diamond over my hammock

I enjoyed that so much Mike

Thanks and look forward to more and seeing your forest turn red maybe
Have a good evening
