First Night Camping in a Swag Tent with My Dog

I go camping in the woods with my dog. This time I do my first night camping in a canvas swag tent. These durable bivi/tents are ideal for overlanding and 4x4 camping as they are quite bulky but extremely comfortable. This one has a thick mattress which rolls up inside the tent and a number of other really cool features like a fold-out porch, mud mat, and multiple windows. It was a class night in the woods and my dog Jaxx and I loved it!

There's an unnoficial saying in Australia that says Once you've camped with a swag, there's no going back! .
The only significant difference with the australian swags, is they have a permanent rain awning at each end that is held out buy the guy ropes. The better designed swags have the same small window, as often you're using them with the windows open, even during storms(thunderstorms.
I'm assuming that one also needs to be seasoned before use, as most canvas tents do. otherwise they can leak during rain. Especially Australia's rain. .

I don't understand those giant swags? A swag should be like a cowboy bedroll, really basic. I've never camped in south Africa or Australia but I have spent a lot of time in Northern Mexico ard southwest united states and I imagine it's pretty similar. I have a 8 by 14 foot canvas wall tent that takes up less space than that thing. Then again very little of what overlander do makes sense to me

LOL! I saw the size of that bag and thought this was gonna be a tent big enough for a small family!
You got it assembled and thought, _Well that'll do for your dog. Where's the real tent for yourself? _
That's not much bigger than a Slumberjack bivvy.
But to each, their own.
Here's what you do: leave the tent and mattress at home. Just take the bag. Sleep in it.

My brother goes to town with the elf on the shelf, bum hanging over the sink and coco pops in the sink with little bits of toilet paper love that tent tho, be good up here in Scotland during the summer where it gets light really early in the morning like 3: 30, I love my bivvy but the light mornings make it hard to sleep once it gets light outside

If i take a tent while camping with an overland vehicle, i would bring a bell tent. Packs up just the same probably. But i do like the quality by the looks of it. Also, i like the light, really cool design and i love the soft light temperature, but 199 for a little light is insane, imo. I'll consider buying it when the price goes down in the future

My dog is exactly the same when we're wild camping - sat next to me, on edge and shivering. Yet he loves the outdoors and he's fine before dusk, and once we're in the tent and going to sleep. I guess after thousands of years evolving to sleep in buildings, they're probably overwhelmed by all the new information they're receiving in the dark!

I enjoyed that. I camp out too with my dog. She likes to explore, so I keep her in a bright red jacket sometimes with reflective tape ( doggie Hi-vis ). Keep on camping, take your children, teach them. That is so much more than a short holiday. It s life skills. Skills are no burden, they re carried in your head and last a lifetime.

Mike, I have a SWAG and a dog Mr Bladrick. He camps with me and a little simple tip to keep the mattress clean is get a drab colored fitted ( elastic ) single sized bed sheetand slip it over Ollie's mattress and if it gets a bit grubby from you or the dogs paws you just wash the fitted sheet. Simple but it works a treat.

leave the boots on the leaves always and allow only stocking feet on the plastic doormat. That way it stays clean always. You stand on it with one foot while slipping the boots on or off on the other foot. Then stand on mat or leaves depending on which way you are going, and do the other foot or boot. simple

I bought a bike swag which rolls up to the size of a 2L soda bottle and just a bit longer, I swapped out the mattress it came with and put a self inflating one in, if it's raining I take a tarp that packs up to about half the size of the swag. But I go camping off of a motorbike so I'm about saving space.

I am pleased to see you cast a wider net than just the 'go-light' equipment. The older I got, the more I appreciated a bit more room and a bit more sturdiness. This item is a bit too much of a bivvy for my preference. The spreader bar is truly needed in this style of shelter. I made my own with PVC pipe.

Just a little tip. The woven plastic re-useable veg/fruit bags with a drawstring are really handy for keeping stuff, like your wood wool firelighters. Most supermarkets sell them for pennies to reduce single use plastic waste. That way you bag won't be full of broken bits of firelighters.

a very controversial choice of knife, smelly Opinel and potatoes, and other horsetails? And you can't cut on your finger with such a knife. The author disappointed with the little things - he could not drag the tent, the knife spoils the food, he was left without fingers.

Traditionally in Australia these are stored on the tray of your 4wd and when you stop to camp you just roll it off and set it up right next to your car. They are also usually rolled up with a duvet and sheets on the mattress that's why the storage bag is so much bigger.

Nice light. If I had 2. 36 subs, I would buy one at 199. 00, and my S. O. would not hang me from the short hairs. Until then, I will catch fireflies. But I do like that Light. I would stick that Swag Tent on a Flatbed Bike trailer for a road trip.

down side of a swag tent is. weight. being canvas, it is heavy. i looked at these in OZ, but was too heavy to go on a m/bike. NOW. if they did it in lightweight materials. that would be awesome, but they won't. they are built for hard outback use.

I love and hate it at the same time.
My biggest problem is the size. Huge bag with a tiny tent. I couldn't even sit straight in there.
Other thing. if you close all doors, it's an oven. I'm sure of it.
I do like a lot table and lamp

The weather in your videos always seems really nice, as a lad from Manchester I can confidently say that it's been raining here everyday for the past month or 2 without fail. Loving the videos mate, looking forward to some winter content soon

Outhouse makes some really good stuff. Our dog does the same thing halfway between a squirm and a wiggle, therefore a squiggle. I grew up with heavy duty oiled canvas military tarps and they sure did keep the water off. Enjoy the fall and winter.

Yeah! It is fore sure a JRT rype of behavior. All of mine did that as well all the shivers and paw lifting in the world as soon as food is around or they want some cuddle.
Nice tent. I hope that the axe comes around really soon. Take care
