From Tree to Cabin: Full Off Grid Build

From 100 year old ash tree to tiny cabin in the woods. This is the full off grid build of our small forest cabin. Using wood that we milled up from a giant ash tree which had blown down in a storm, we build a foundation frame using 4x4 posts from the tree, and then cladded the cabin with Ash planks from the same tree. Inside we insulated it, and made a small kitchen/worktop area, some folding windows, and installed a woodstove to keep warm in the winter months. Thank you for watching! Knowing how hilarious your Dad is in your other videos, makes me laugh in this video even without him saying anything (just looking out the window. Love the videos you make with your Dad.
To be fair, I like all the videos you do, Mike. Good variety. The voice over Bushcraft videos, the builds with no dialogue, camping and talking to the camera, or the builds where your Dad is cracking you up, too.

I lived in a cabin like that for 4 years trying to get my debt down enough to live reasonably. (my ex-wife had drained all my accounts) I enjoyed my 3 seasons there each year, but winter was brutal. 2 feet of snow would drop about every 3 or 4 days and I had to shovel and plow my way out to get to work. The last year I said to hell with it and stayed in a hotel!

Hey Mike. Just want to ask your views on the Eswing joinery axe for bushcraft
I usually carry one when heading out camping as they hold a really good edge you can shave with.
I also need to get a good bushcraft knife that wont break the bank. Any suggestions. Im using a Mora clipper for most chores.

Re running an old video to draw people back in Again You lost us 2 years ago. When you quit improving on your Woodland. You made a big deal about an english Woodland and improving it and maintaining it. You drew us all in and you'll walk the way. Give us reason why we should come back and watch.

Also seeing you and your dad still fishing building laughing, not as much camping together, but still father and sonning after all these years
So glad you’re thankful for your dad, value the time you have, and share it with us we all respect that elder TA fisherman

When did you sneak that build in. Totally beautiful little cabin hideaway and so nice to see you and your Dad on another project.
Now I don’t want to be nit pickingso I won’t. Well done and thanks for the content. Great use of a downed tree.

Mike, I love your videos and I have followed a somewhat similar life path. But I also find relief in watching something from an intelligent country where common sense, science, and decency still mean something. That was once true of the U. S.

Why the electrical stuff I’m here for the old school bushcraft hand and saw. With the way the world is going we’re going to need all the tips and tricks available just as a back up. ain’t going to be electric if the poop hits the fan

Great cabin. The only thing is. You used panels of plywood and some bought 2x4. I was hoping to see what you would do without plywood for the roof and the floor from that tree. But hey. Great little cabin

You should check out Mr. Chickadee. He has built traditional Japanese style buildings, and the way he did the support posts would have helped you with those logs.
And he used only hand tools.

I love cabin build. A lot of inspiration here. Thanks for sharing this journey. Well worth spending the 40 minutes or so to see this video. Thanks for sharing the adventure, mate.

Awesome! But how long do you expect base posts to stay stable as they're just resting on the ground And why no heat protection around the wood burner
