Making a shelter out of natural woodland materials is an essential bushcraft skill. There is a number of techniques and shelters out there. Mike Pullen shows you the A-frame bushcraft shelter. Using materials found around him and armed with just a folding saw, Mike gives you some tips on his version of the 'A' frame shelter. Mike is in a coniferous forest and is surrounded by predominantly pine trees. The shelter takes roughly an hour to build depending on how large you make it. He uses bracken to waterproof the outer layer. We hope you enjoy the video, Mike will be back out in the field soon Please feel free to subscribe, like or leave a comment: )

Bracken is great as a material but the risks of limes disease is high as its a favourite hiding plant for ticks from deer & sheep etc limes disease from ticks is very serious & many hundreds of people in the uk get it. its actually suggested if you walk through bracken you should tuck your trousers into your socks & do a tick check & certainly learn tick removal to stop infection. Never again will I sleep in a bracken shelter unless wrapped in a bug nett & deer etc are not able to get into the area for years

2 tips out of experience, never build your A-frame onto a tree, trees give off cold and when it rains water runs down on them creating more cold. Also if you were to put a fire with reflector in front of the opening it would block the warmth coming into the shelter. Also, isn't the shelter a little high to keep the warmth? I usually build mine around half the height you built yours, out of experience it helps a lot to contain the warmth inside. Other than that it's a top vid Thumbs up

Watching a catch up. New Years Eve 2018 tomorrow. this looks great and sturdy and the fearns deflect the water. I haven't asked many questions Mike as I usually find them answered as I watch more. Thanks it's good to see an early episode too. Wishing you and all your family a very Happy New Year. there goes 2018. Here comes a fresh start 2019. whoppeee.

When can I move in Mike. That shelter is built better than my house. It looks very well constructed and I wouldn't hesitate to spend a night or two sleeping in there. That saw you reviewed is really paying off, I also love the way you use two trees as a lever to break long branches great little tip that one. Keep up the great show mate.

Great Job The angle on the ridgeline was a great touch and I will be incorporating it into my A frames from now on. only pointer i would have is to start at the very bottom of the shelter with the bracken/ferns, and layer them as you go up. this helps temendously in rainy weather. keep up the good work brother

Nice wee shlter Mike great for an overnighter as you say or as a survival shelter with no need to worry about paracord or other materials to bind it together and that has to be a great bonus Great tip cutting the ridge at an angle as a wedge.

7: 58 I'd rather take the other side of the first log and put it against the other tree so I can put sticks on the sides down and leave a opening for more space (im making this for my friend and I ) can you try Thank you

How did that shelter of sticks and ferns hold up in a rain storm with wind? PNW guy here; we have lots of rain and our terrain is nowhere nearly as flat and open or lacking in underbrush.

It would be nice if you would put the links to the other videos you reference in the description, so we can watch the rest of this vid and then goo to the link for the other one.
