Building a grass roof bushcraft viking house with hand tools. We build an icelandic - style turf roof viking shelter using simple bushcraft tools and natural materials from the forest. The tiny house is build using traditional hand tools, such as drawknife, auger, axe and saw. We built the timber frame from scots pine, making mortise and tenon joints and burning the ends of the logs that go in the ground. This is an ancient technique used by our ancestors, it helps to prevent the wood rotting by driving out bugs and forming a protective layer. To support the turf on the roof of the viking home, we used hazel hurdles. These are simply green hazel sticks woven together. When they dry they set hard and form a solid structure. We also built the perimiter wall of the bushcraft shelter using this woven stick method. This viking house was inspired by the vikings of iceland. Where trees were used in building regularly, they soon became scarce and so they had to improvise. Iceland has good quality sod, and plenty of stone. And so they built a large stone foundation and then used layers of sod and turf to insulate their homes from the strong atlantic storms. We had no stone in this woodland, but the overall style of the structure was inspired by these resourceful tribes

Ah, the sweet sound of silence, waiting 4 the world powers to stop this inane fabricated shamdemic, it's biologically impossible to tell grown Men to stop working, constructing & creating. Unless the NWO is trying to initiate a global economy collapse, hey let's shut down international commerce with a fear induced panicdemic & lotsa fake news. The math sez only 1. 2% of supposed deaths related to this man made farce: the odds of dying from a Bahco saw wound or possibly falling on a Scotch Eyed Auger or tripping over a Morakniv have greater odds. Mike, Thanx 4 letting us fellowship with Jax, Poppa & you in the solace of the Brotherhood of Bushcrafting; between your, GR & the Bertram vids, it's been a very satisfying 2020, can't wait to get my hands dirty again here in Pennsylvania soon Thanx 2 social distancing being an Isolationist Woodsman is very popular presently, unless UR a potential unibomber lol. Peace 2U Brother

One thing I can never figure out is why, when you have a saw, you, or anyone, chop trees down? It is so much easier and far safer to use a saw. If you are being stealthy, far less noise too. You cut the tree close to the ground and leave almost no stump, and then, if done right the cut is fairly square. Well, it's your choice, I'd use a saw. ;-)

At first, I was like 'ohh dude you're cutting live trees', but when I saw the background; 'oh gosh, the forest is too dense, cut more trees to provide more sunlight to its bottom'Soo creepy. Love your vids as always. I am sure, this will turn into a very good, heavy duty viking house.

I got into bushcrafting since a year ago, right now I have to deal with some health issues that prevent me from going out in the woods, but man the itch is real. Thanks for these videos, great techniques, great editing, thanks for what you do
