Starkly Beautiful Back Roads Drive: Rapid City, SD to Cheyenne, WY - Far Off The Interstate Went to Rapid City in 1997. It was early August when we took our then new born and 4 year old with us. It was the longest stretch of highway Id ever seen. There were no gas stations for miles and no signs of human life. Occasionally, wed pass by a town so small its population was 10, per population signs. Once we reached Rapid City, it was busy with folks. We were tired and hungry, and it was late. We luckily found an open restaurant, and a hotel close by. The town is set up rather oddly, but it was easy to find our way around it. We saw the sights the next day. Id never spent so much time in a vehicle in my entire life. We had to travel back to Kansas on a one week vacation to Colorado, Wyoming, and S. Dakota. The landscapes were beautiful. The mountains were higher than Id ever known them to be. Ski resorts shut down for the summer. The air was pure, and skys were the bluest Id ever seen. The days were in the 70s, at night much colder. We witnessed a hail of large rock falling on our way into Jackson hole Wyoming. One car had been hit, but nobody was hurt. The ppl were friendly, and the restaurants menues had things on them Id never seen before, like Elk, and deer, and even Bear. I ordered off a childs menu for a beef steak and grilled sweet potato. the steak was much bigger than I had expected for a childs menu. Ill never forget that trip.

Haven’t driven that route but been to RC 3X. Our camp was in Keystone near Mt Rushmore. Spent 2 summers there at that camp. Had to cross the RR tracks of 1880s train which was featured in Gunsmoke segment Snow Train. It was June & I built a fire in the fireplace of our cabin. Up the mountain was very cold & windy.
Been to Rushmore before they put up all the walkways & rails. Beautiful country.
My friend was in Gurnsey or Torrington which is near Lusk. We went to pick him up. His room was so small you could sit on the toilet, brush your teeth & take a bath all at the same time.
So love the wes: SD, WY & MT. Colorado didn’t do much for me except the switchbacks. Have you driven any switchbacks

1942, I was two years old, my brother was a newborn, and my parents packed up from Mason City, Iowa, and moved to Aberdeen, Washington. No freeways, probably not many amenities along the road, and my baby brother was tucked up in the back window of the coop. I seem to remember them saying that my brother was only about three months old which would mean they were driving in the middle of the winter. I wish I had more details of the trip because it must’ve been horrendous.

My mom grew up west of the Mule Creek Junction on a ranch. Boarded in town in Lusk for high school. I was born in Torrington, my paternal grandparents had a u pump it gas station there.
Was home in June.
Yiu should have seen Lusk and Torrington of my childhood or even the late 60s and early 70s. They are so run down now
But still so much my heart is there.
Cheyenne the best place to stay is Little America. Amazing rooms and service!

I got pulled over by the police driving through Torrington. I was trying to go from St. Louis all the way to Casper, WY in one day. I remember the policeman said if you drive that way through some of these small towns in Wyoming you're asking for trouble. He wrote out only a warning though. He was right--I wasn't watching the speed as I drove into the town. That was at least 20 years ago.

YES the best scenic route to Cheyenne. Traveled dozens of times between Hot Springs and Cheyenne to do quarterly shopping trips. Easy road trip without the boredom and traffic of US 385 to I-80 West. Glad y'all took the time to explore some of our Black Hills neighborhood and surrounding tri-state region.

I enjoyed riding along. I currently live on the East Coast in a congested area with bumper-to-bumper traffic. How I long to just drive through wide-open spaces and not much traffic. Your journey from Rapid City to Cheyenne gave me the escape I needed, even if it was just virtual. Thanks!

That was a wonderful nostalgia trip for me, thank you so much for this video. I've driven this route several times, back in the day. Skirting around Wyoming's desolate Thunder Basin is an amazing trip through an old American wilderness. The road less traveled, indeed.

Wyoming has been my dream state to go to, when I'm in my final days. I've been out there before and I just love small town America in places like Wyoming, Utah, north dakota, Montana. I'm born and raised just outside princeton and trenton new jersey

You go to some really interesting places and, for the most part, your presentation is great. But the graffiti, trash cans in alleys and dive bars, I always end up terminating your videos. They're just plain butt ugly, and I don't need to see them.

Looks a lot like 385, 20, and 71 across Nebraska, once out of Edgemont.
Out of Hot Springs, one can take 71 all the way to Colorado 14, and into Fort Collins without using any interstate, and there's some stuff to see doing that trip as well.

25 years in Fairfield county Connecticut and the last seven in Chicago. Just moved to Sioux falls but spent 3 ms in Rapid city. There is no traffic whatsoever out here in South Dakota and the speed limit on the highways are 80 mph maximum

What a great video and great music! Not even a word spoken and not needed. I love that stretch of highway from Mule Creek Junction to Lusk, WY. The Sea of Grass is quite a sight. It is a vast expanse. You captured it very well.

Lots of nostalgia for me, as I grew up southwest of Lusk a ways (like 75 miles) Had family in Lusk, WY for a long time, and the drive betwixt Lusk and Newcastle was a drive we made several times a year for many years!

Love watching your drives. I live in the UK but have visited the USA over 20 times. I've driven from Washington DC to Boston in 11hrs and drove from San Fransico to Las Vegas in 12hrs. I like driving round the US.

You also drove through Hawk Springs. That was the little blip of a town shortly after Torrington. If you ever make that trek again have dinner at the long branch steakhouse in Hawk Springs. its a hidden gem.

I've been following your travels lately and enjoy your presentation of the places you see. I know this route from Rapid to Cheyenne like the back of my hand. Thanks for filming it!

Do you realize you probably passed by a dozen nuclear missile silos without even knowing they were there Lots of them in that area, but they don't exactly advertise their presence.

Had a holiday from England, travelled this road from Cheyenne to Rapid City, visited Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument, really lovely

I lived in Denver for 8 years after growing up in South Dakota. I made many trips back and forth. I have trouble thinking of US 85 as a back road.
reply

Thought this would help my homesickness, backfired spectacularly. It's taking all I've got not to hop in the car & drive home to the prairie
reply

Brought back a lot of memories. I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB and often traveled to Cheyenne or Denver. Drove it again a couple years ago.
reply

I already knew that was the road going towards hot springs before you even got there, took that road to hot springs more than a few times

Gonna wind up watching/listening to this video multiple times. Beautiful music. Nice editing. You’re really in a good groove. Great stuff.
reply

Enjoy your videos, however, you go through them so fast without taking time to let the viewers to look around. So I am unsubscribing.

Good afternoon Mr. Spoda your vlog makes want to more, and your camera work, including the music is brilliant. Greatings from Germany

I wish you had added the state when you mentioned the towns. I’m not familiar with those little towns in what state they’re in.
reply

I very much enjoy your choices of music. They have been great going down the road music. The whole package is very nicely done.
reply

Thanks for the memories! I took this exact route from Rapid City to Cheyenne with friends on our motorcycles. Awesome ride!

WILD. I just stumbled across this video today, after having made THIS EXACT SAME DRIVE on the DAY (Friday) that you posted it!

If you like trains, the UP museum is in the train depot downtown and there used to be a roundhouse tour at the UP yards.

just trying to imagine this without the road. must have been incredible to do this journey on horseback 100 years ago.
