Tuscaloosa town has spead out now. The Old downtown is nothing like it use to be. The McFarland Mall on Skyland closed a lot of the shop's in downtown and the University Mall on McFarland Blvd Years later, shut down alot of the McFarland Mall. It's always out with the old and in with the new. Then the Tornado in 2011 that went through the heart of the city also changed everything. The downtown area hold a special place in my heart with all the big name shops that was once there. Every Christmas they had all the place decorated with lights on every building. There was 4 theaters the Bama Capri, Druid, and one other I forgot the name of it. We also had a drive in theater call the Dale Drive In. I miss those days!

Before the University was formed the land belonged to Bryce mental asylum, it went from the campus to the interstate, the University bought the remaining grounds of the asylum and moved them to a new location and tore the old building down or remodeled it for more housing not sure, I think the graves of the patients and Dr Bryce and his wife are still there though. Also there is a steel plant near Tuscaloosa in Northport called Nucor steel, right behind the Jemison center which was also known as old Bryce which it wasn't, it held black mental patients, and named after senator Robert Jemison in which you seen his house.

There’s a small town a hour southeast of Tuscaloosa called Montevallo, home of the University of Montevallo! If you ever get a chance to visit, it’s 100% worth the trip. The university’s campus is everything you think of when think of a small southern town- red brick streets, old style street signs, brick archways, beautiful old (and definitely haunted) buildings, and amazing old trees! LOTS of history there on UM’s campus. The town is tiny but charming. Also home to American Village which has replicas of many historical American buildings! I went to UM from 2016-2020, worth a visit if you’re ever in the area!

Hey Lord Spoda and wifey; love your videos and commentary. In a city like Tuscaloosa (and many others) there are a lot of interesting places that someone not local would know about. The video was great (I am a former resident and call it my hometown, but I do have a suggestion. Since you are now famous, you could probably easily hook up with a local historian or city guide/expert and capture a bit more of the standout sites, buildings, and lore. Missing almost nothing famous. Just a suggestion.

Hello, I’m in country Australia & it’s been very interesting watching your travels throughout the south US & the history of country, towns & cities. I’ve always wondered about rural America & what the real America is/looks like, not what we are likely to see on the news. I follow a farming family in Alabama on you tube & look forward to seeing their updates, as with you for insight into rural America. Very different to rural Australia. Cheers, happy travels. 7: 32

If you ever get back there you need to go to Dreamland BBQ. One of the smallest but best BBQ restaurants you will ever eat at. As small as it is you may be sitting next to a city worker on one side of you and a senator on the other side. People from all walks of life eat at the place. The building is not much to look at and it actually looks like a dilapidated shack but is a local ledgeon for a restaurant.

Tuskaloosa was the paramount chief in Alabama when DeSoto's Expedition came thru. The natives had their fill of the Spanish so he lured them into a trap with plans to wipe them out. They misjudged the Spaniards skill fighting on horse back so got wiped out instead along with Tuskaloosa. The Spanish said he was extremely tall and towered over the Spanish.

There are a lot of trees in Tuscaloosa and the University as you mentioned, so both areas are particularly beautiful and scenic in Spring, Summer and Fall. Driving across the Black Warrior River Bridge from Northport into Tuscaloosa is also very scenic with many large, beautiful trees on both sides of the river.

3: 42 Tuscaloosa was not the original capital of Alabama. Cahawba was the first permanent capital from 1820-1825 then it was moved to Tuscaloosa in 1826, before finally moving to Montgomery in 1846

Greek life dominates the student government and social life on campus. It’s not as dominant as it once was, but U of A is still affected by them. I lived in Tuscaloosa for three years in the 80’s.

Just for the record - The Alabama Crimson Tide is the most successful football program of the last 100 years, not just the past 20 years. 18 National Championships since 1925.

I went to graduate school in Alabama. I was happy when I left, and nothing I saw here has changed my mind or made me feel at all nostalgic for Tuscaloosa.

It's sad that all the money that the Alabama football program gets stays in that program. I've been all over Tuscaloosa and it's a very sad place
