Numbers can be misleading. Especially the poverty rate of the older people. I'm not downplaying people's sorrows, but if you're a widow with your house paid for, you can live pretty good on even a small pension. My mother did fine even in the high-tax state of RI on just a pension, and I'm sure it would have been considered under the poverty level. I do fine myself, and now that I'm older, because my house and van are paid for and I live in a low-property-tax area, I can live pretty good on practically nothing.

I worked the ambulance in a lot of those north east Texas towns. Grew up there all my life and I live in Tyler now.
Then crime stats in those towns are higher, not due to poverty or being higher than larger cities, but due to crime being better reported. I know that goes against what some experts say but the reality is since they are small, people see something and they call immediately. Probably better than in a large city where people just simply ignore something happening.

That Red River Courthouse is nice, but it looks like it needs to be power-washed, at least. Maybe I'm getting the wrong impression with the angle of the sun. I have to power-wash my townhouse in SWVA every other year or it starts looking shabby. With the wind coming over the prairies, I would imagine some of the houses you go by that look bad are fine, but the owners just don't want to keep painting it after every winter. Seems like those winds will just strip a house of paint.

hi joe n nick i been watching your yt ch and i love to watch it in my free time. This one really finds me well if you like a town or place with peaceful and less crowded or in other words laid back person this is gem. But on the other context, this is so ironic that this place is less inhabited imagine if the U. S government allow those people who wants to come to U. S desperately to depopulate this areas then this town will relive again. That's just my humble opinion.

As newlyweds, we made a similar trip through the Mississippi delta, Texas, and Alabama in the mid 80's. At that time these shacks like that shown at 24: 16 were occupied by poor impoverished people dressed in rags rocking on the front stoop with dogs and children in the dirt yard. There was usually no electricity or running water. Perhaps it is time for this type of housing to return to nature.

I am watching your video about Deport. After you said the town was named after Colonel Dee Thompson, but couldn't figure out how they got Deport out of his name. I began looking, as I tend to be curious about unsolved things. I didn't find anything connecting the two either. Do you think even though there is not a waterway there, they used 'port' anyway
Dee port = Deport
Thoughts

I live in the UK and I love driving in your country. Such a beautiful place filled with kind, friendly people. I'm also struck by how you can be driving through what seems like a wilderness, and yet you're on a perfectly paved road with white lines and signage. I am constantly reminded that the American people are NOT like their politicians

It's good to know about these places, but I couldn't/wouldn't live in one of them - for the same reasons so many choose to leave. I did, however, spend a couple years on a diary farm as a child in nearby Tennessee Colony. Fond memories. Besides, I'm a city guy. I never saw the rabbit [24: 28]. Looked for it, though.

My husband and I love watching your videos! As a retired librarian, I'd like to suggest that you point out a library if you ever see one in a town you visit. My husband would like to see you talk to folks you see walking around the town. We have enjoyed the chats you've done in some of your videos.

Was that an Atlanta Falcons sticker turned backwards I saw on most of the buildings/signs in the last town you showed There was no text on it so this Northeastern guy's a bit confused by what he saw. It is Texas after all. Georgia isn't exactly close.

If you want the towns to come back then you're going to have to rip out the interstates that basically allow people to drive & cut through a community to get to a job or a school without actually interacting with the community in any serious capacity.

From what I've read, yes Deport is named after Colonel Dee Thompson and the town is pronounced DEE-port. Where they got the Port from is beyond me. From the map, I couldn't even see a river, never mind an ocean or lake for a Port

Nice to see some small towns in USA. I've been an expat most of my adult life. Got a little homesick for the US when I saw this video. If I ever decide to come back to the US, I wouldn't mind retiring in some small town.

I like that you went thru Paris, TX. It’s way bigger than all the other towns in this video. They’re restoring their downtown that’s why it’s pretty neat and have local businesses. I love it there.

I wish you would address available medical care. How far do they have to drive and ambulance services I’ve always wondered that as I’ve watched your videos. Thanks for this consideration.

You didn't quote the average house price in Deport, that happens when you don't give the numbers in one go, in between you talk of other things that make some people impatient.

A lot of people carry on about all the dysfunction of big cities, but rarely, if ever, bring any attention to the status and fate of small, dying towns.
