This is a very complicated conversation. Respect is tied to value. Some folks feel as if they have no value. Those links are quite systematic. Looking at a few simple videos where the majority population is white and middle-class (another entire psychosis and conversation for some in this society) isnt going to help. I grew up in the suburbs of Maryland (and Im of that 1% Im sure so many sigh in relief over, so I had a clean neighborhood and an excellent place to live. It wasnt rich, but moderate and modest. Those who dont come from a people robbed of value and equity from the start may not understand what it takes to build respect. The inner cities were red-lined and abandoned, set-up for poverty. It is no wonder big alcohol and tobacco place their massive street signs and liquor stores throughout those areas, in large numbers, and business owned by certain ethnic groups simply abandoned the regions, after industry shut down. Without understanding the systematic causes of poverty and inner-city mechanisms, you cant just judge them like that (thought, I gather you meant well, as so many claim to. I live in Montpelier, Vermont now, but have great empathy for those having to grow up inner-cities. I never had to grow up that way, but I understand the intricacies and social nuances that create those places. Believe me, the mentality of some of the majority is not innocent in this. Having to give race numbers is a misnomer, since race is NOT a scientific concept, but a social one. It makes my skin crawl to be told those numbers, as so many people find it so important to their identity.

I grew up outside Belfast in the 70s and 80s. Belfast was the poorest county seat of the poorest county. Some forward thinking people courted MBNA (worlds largest affiliate credit card distributor bought out by BoA) Corporate Headquarters. MBNA detoxified the entire waterfront in exchange for a private runway on the airport. From there the town started to turn around as an economic center. After MBNA was bought out and jobs moved Belfast transitioned fully to tourism.
The level of child poverty is because many of the jobs of parents in the city are service jobs. The businesses are own by old families for the most part or middle age folks semi-retiring to a coastal town and the shop is a hobby and tax write off. The pay is substandard and seasonal.

After Augusta, ya should jotted down south a few miles to Winthrop. Quaint, quiet, and beautiful, situated at one end of Maranacook Lake. You could go a little farther south to Lewiston/Auburn and have a hoagie at Sam’s. Then you could drive East to the coast and take US-1 to Cooks Corner and hang Eastward on StateRoute-24. This will take you ultimately to Bailey Island (and Gift Shop) at Land’s End. The road literally runs into the Ocean. Along your way there, you will be crossing across a chain of islands. A breath-taking journey.
ONE NOTE: It has been a long time since I was last in Maine, but then, they have a HUGE sign NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS. So you may want to load-out while you in or near Cook’s Corner.

Bangor. pronounced Bang-gor. hard g. Orono. pronounced Or-ruh-no. Not criticizing (it's nice to see my old stomping grounds up on video, just offering the correct regional pronunciation. Stephan King's house is on West Broadway and has many of the old lumber baron's homes there. Across the end of the street (onto Union Street) and up the hill a ways is Thomas Hill Road where many of the sea captains home were and also the Queen City Standpipe. Sorry, I stopped watching when you said you were heading down to Augusta. Augusta kind of sucks. no one goes there. It's the armpit of Maine (everyone except those who live there think so, anyway. LOL. The state capitol building is pretty sweet, though. Thanks for the video.

It's BANG GORE your not from here don't say bangah. and as I said in your other video. your median home values are easy off from what we would want to live in and the houses you are seeing are not the median house/value those are on the high side. and you don't go and see the slums that bring the avg down. Firthermore. the poverty seems surprising. but the reality is it's all those from away thatove in with money and push locals out. the locals that stay. are. well stubborn. poor. and refuse to leave as they should.

It is indeed one of the most beautiful small towns it has ever been my privilege to live in. It did my heart good to hear you speak so highly of it.
And yes, you were correct regarding the wages of the working class, in general they are abysmally low. Or at least they were when I worked and lived there. The only trade off is living in an area so lovely.

The street the Stephen King house is on is W. Broadway, Broadway is a completely different street, I just saved everyone 45 minutes of searching on the wrong street. Broadway did have a really cool restaurant called Nicky’s Cruzin’ Diner which was awesome, I miss that place. If you watch the old movie Peyton Place you will see a lot of mid coast Maine including the Whitehall Inn which still looks the same now.

Most of downtown Bangor was destroyed in the 1911 fire. If you think it's mostly white now, you should've seen it when I was growing up. PLEASE, check your pronunciations. Orono is Or-uh-no and Bangor has a hard G as in lifeGuard. The canal is Kenduskeag Stream. Also, that big white house next to the King residence, is one he bought for a writer's retreat.

It was a staple outfitter for loggers, hunters and fishermen for decades. It went out of business in the late 80s-early 90s.

I live down the street a block away from Stephen Kings house. I've been here almost 20 yrs and have never seen him once. The white house next to his is his sons. Never seen him either. I love Bangor. Way better than Lewiston. Don't go to Lewiston. Born and raised there. It turned into Little Somalia. Bad place to live. Thank God for Bangor.

My professor Kate Retzlaff thoroughly researched the beginnings of Belfast. It was named after Belfast Ireland because the first two men to settle that area argued over whether to name it Belfast or another name I can't remember. So they agreed to flip a coin. Belfast won. : ) She's written a book about it.

Maine was also a major player in the underground railroad. There was a tunnel from the river to a house in Brewer, we called The Christmas House, however, I never saw any one in or around that house since the 60s, in which was found slave clothing before it was so unceremoniously torn down by the city.

He hasnt occupied that house for nearly 20 years but we used to take our children there to trick or treat. Wow it was awesome, indeed!
BTW That is West Broadway that Stephen King lived on, Broadway is on the other side of Kenduskeag stream. He also owns the rock radio station in town, WZON.

Moved from Bangor to Salt Lake City back in 2019. It’s nice to see the towns that I use to visit when I lived there in your two videos. If you get a chance to come back you should come around Columbus Day, visit Bar Harbor and Arcadia National Park when the leaves are changing.

I am in NH not Maine, but your child poverty numbers are probably drawn from the WIC and SNAP numbers maybe In the more liberal towns there is a lot more services in place to steer people to apply for these gov't programs than in the conservative towns. Just saying.

Regarding the crime in Bangor, which also includes all of our other 'big' cities, substance abuse is a severe problem up here and has been since the late 00s.

My Dad graduated from Belfast High, as did his Dad. I am Class of 1974 from Bangor High. I have lived and worked throughout the state, and, lpke you, I love walking through the old dowmtowns. Great videos! Bob in Maine
