RHODE ISLAND: I Drove The (Surprisingly Long) Coastline - Toured Bristol, Newport & Westerly Its too late to change now, so I dont expect or want you to, but Im more curious. Why always list the income as per week. I dont know anyone who thinks of their income on a weekly basis. Most of us pay rent or have a mortgage that is our largest expense that comes out monthly (as does electric, gas, water, phone, cell phone, netflix, car insurance, health insurance, renters insurance, home insurance, life insurance) in fact I cant think of a single expense I have that recurs on a weekly basis. Perhaps someone who lives in a long term hotel pays weekly, but they still probably get their disability checks and food stamps on a monthly basis. And no one I know gets paid on a weekly basis. Biweekly, monthly, occasionally twice monthly (as opposed to bi weekly) but never weekly.
Just curious to hear your reasoning for this decision if you happen to see this comment.
Great content, I love watching your videos. Keep up the good work.

Since you're such a fan of pubs and bars, I absolutely suggest taking a road trip through Ireland. I'm from Colorado and road-tripped Ireland last year. Putting nearly 1, 000km on the rental car, I visited Belfast, Derry, Armagh, Tullamore, Kilkenny, Waterford, New Ross, and of course, Dublin. Such an amazingly beautiful countryside, the friendliest people on Earth, and a total blast. If you ever decide to do this an need an American guide, I'm always down for another trip. I'll be making Ireland part of my international rotation ever few years for sure. One trip is not enough.

Newport is a tourist based seasonal town. Many of those shops will greatly reduce their hours and close after Labor day. That is why Newport was so busy and had all those people. The winter off season rents were less than $1000/mo all in for pretty nice places. The seasonal rates were that much a WEEK.
I lived in Middletown an entire off season, Sept-May. (you would have passed my old house when you crossed the strand from Middletown near the strand)
Come back a month later and the whole feel of the city will be different. And much cheaper.

Being a former Bristolian growing up there in my youth, the best history exploration one can start is in the graveyards. The oldest of them reveal the shipping magnates, explorers, business titans, movie starts and public figures. As a kid I practically lived at the Haffenraffer Museum next to Linden Place. My grandparents home on Central Street was built in 1732, and had the oldest original front door in RI. Travelling this nation I can tell you we had the best education on American History in the nation, bar none.

I so enjoy your vlogs. What I missed in this one, when you both review the food from a local restaurant, pub or tavern. I married into a family whose ancestors arrived on the second ship, The Fortune, to land on the Eastern Seaboard in the 1600's and what has been pounded into my head by my late father-in-law is how the seafood from the Eastern Seaboard is far! better than that of the west coast out here in CA. Thank you for inviting us all on your trips.

Did you really not go down Bellevue Avenue and then Ocean Avenue in Newport ON the coastline Its the most amazing transformation you'll see between old wealth and new money anywhere in the world!
All the mansions are worth well over $5M EASY, the biggest difference is their age which spans centuries! And the Breakers is one of the most famous mansions in the entire country.

The Northeast has a long tradition of 'clean drinking' or going out to drink for something other than just getting smashed or rowdy. Remember, people are generally more tolerant here, and aren't ready to fight over differences as much. Bars are very common in most cities here and are almost always places to eat and drink. They didn't call them public houses for nothing.

Love your videos. Newport did lose population when Nixon pulled out the Navy for spite. But, our state is so beautiful that it was able to rebound with tourism. You went over the Newport Bridge and passed right through the island I live on. Jamestown. You missed Beavertail lighthouse one of the oldest around. Too bad. I think I would have liked visiting the Island.

As a life long Rhode Islander, I loved growing up and raising a family here. But, RI has become waaay overcrowded, expensive and perennially corrupt, politically. Unfortunately there is nothing to do but leave for greener pastures. A great place to visit. food is fantastic! I will always have a place in my heart for my former home. Nice video! Mom grew up in Bristol.

You have visited my father's home town in Maine and now you are in RI. I know Westerly. Taylor Swift lives in town sometimes. The town is Italian Irish and I know people who have recently emigrated, who live in Westerly. Electric Boat in Groton, CT is the largest employer of Rhode Islanders. Thank God you made it to Watch Hill.

Newport is a town of wealthy retirees and singles, and working class families employed in service jobs. There's not much of a middle class - which is shown in the income/poverty numbers. Bristol has many more middle-upper middle class family households. Both lovely towns!

Bristol is a nice place to live, a bit pricey, but a good place to raise a family. Colt State Park is a gathering spot for families from surrounding areas. Spent many Sundays there with the family. But Newport is the best in the area. Great hangout for all ages

LOL. when I was driving truck over the road I went through Rhode Island. My nephew was with me learning to drive truck and he was looking at the map and came to the conclusion that Rhode Island is just a suburb of Providence. Only needs one zip code. :)

Love Lil Rhody!
You really, really missed out on going on a guided Rockefeller mansion tour in Newport. Plus, Little Compton is storybook like. Anyway, hope you catch a film at the Drive-in theater in Wellfleet MA on your way to see Provincetown MA.

Long time viewer first time comenting, It's funny that Americans think 200 years is old, it is 4 people ago to put it in perspective. Keep up the good work and thank you for taking us along for the ride, greetings from Norway

I can’t believe you spent half a day in Newport and didn’t even drive by, or mention the one thing Newport is famous for Millionaire’s Row (Bellevue Ave) and the famous summer cottages of the Gilded Age Robber Barons.

The Act to prohibit the importation of slaves in any port or place within the jurisdiction of the United States, from and after the first day of January [1808. ] was passed. This was the law James DeWolf disregarded.

Watch Traces of the Trade it's a documentary about a DeWolf descendant who looks into her family's wealth and states that her family made most of its wealth when the importation of slaves was illegal.

You missed 90% of the interesting sights in Rhode Island. The largest state capital, the mansions on Bellview Ave in Newport, Jamestown, Wickford, River Walk in Providence, Watch Hill, etc.

President George Washington and his Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson attended the opening ceremonies of Touro Synagogue and congratulated the state for its founding for religious freedom.

You ended the video at watch hill, one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve seen. Sit on that wall overlooking the water to the left of where you were driving. Love taking my wife there

By some estimates, between 1784 and the conclusion of the 2nd Barbary War (1815, the Barbary privateers captured almost 700 American citizens.
Yes white people were slaves.

Thanks for the beautiful video. Thanks for not using annoying, distracting music background that some vloggers use. We can clearly hear & understand every word you say.

Can’t believe you skipped the mansions in Newport! Next time you’ll have to do the Ocean Walk (it’s free) and see all the Gilded Age mansions and Salve Regina college.

Newport was a HUGE Naval port From the late 1800s til the late 1980s
It is still an Officers Candidate School I was stationed there 1978-1982. BEAUTIFUL BASE

reply

They have a great coastline, similar to my area just south of Boston, Atlantic ocean is beautiful, I've been swimming in it my whole life, it's green and cold.
reply

The reason in Newport RI for the downsize in population could be when the large Navy Base closed up. people today do not know there was Navy ships etc there
reply

I live next door to RI in CT you should have tried a local pub and restaurant and tried some seafood dishes. there are some great ones along the shore
reply

Please, please, please tell me you drove past the Newport mansions and along the most beautiful coastal drives in the US but lost the video and didn't post.
reply

Lucky to visit Newport when my son graduated as Navy Officer. Was curious why you missed covering The Cliff Walk and mansions from Gilded Age.
reply

Unfortunately, you missed Beavertail State Park in Jamestown. The lighthouse there is lovely, and the cliffs are beautiful. Maybe next time!
