Dixie shows how and why she packs her pack the way she does. John: Looking back to 2015 Dixie, I can see how our gear has evolved. I have a quarter of my living room full of gear I don't use anymore. That's not counting the gear I've given away. We have both come a long way. Life on the trail is so much easier now, carrying lighter more pack-able gear. in hindsight think about the first few steps on the AT hiking up Amicola falls with that 35 pound pack. I was half dead and soaking wet from sweat and rain when I got to the top of Springer Mtn. And that was the easy part compared to Blood Mtn. (lol) The weather couldn't make up its mind that day it was raining, snowing or hailing and I was exhausted and cold. Over the years you have shared a lot of knowledge learned and helped so many new hikers to not make the same mistake we did on our 1st. thru-hike. Now you are hiking with your mom and Fancy, Your Mom is a viking and I know she loves you. She will now have exciting stories to share with her grand-kids one day thanks to you.

I noticed you put your tent in as one of the last things in your pack -- I have a pack like yours (an Osprey) that has the separate compartment at the bottom, supposedly for your sleeping bag. I very quickly learned after my first section hike that stuff for the rain (like toggs, tyvek ground cover) go in the mesh pockets on the outside of the pack for accessibility. The tent, which also gets wet, I had in a compression sack and that fits in the sleeping bag compartment, with the 'dry' stuff in the main part of the pack. I like the idea of having a contractor plastic bag inside the pack, but I wouldn't want to put a tent on top of that (water runs downhill) because with my luck it would soak everything else.

Thank you! I'm leaving the end of march or being of April. Depending on weather. I have watched a lot of your videos, there great. You have helped me so much. The only worry I have is getting lost. I have never hiked any part of the AT so that's really my only worry. I have a inReach, think I should get a garmin? Is it needed at any point on the trail? Thanks for the videos!

Keep the videos coming. This video helps me a lot as I try and figure out what kind of gear I need to carry. I have some experience hiking but as I'm getting older, I don't want to carry a heavy pack anymore. Because you have experience using the gear I'm more inclined to listen to you instead of a sales person at an outfitter.

Our next camping trip we are doing this weekend has rain in the forecast. It would be fun to see how you dealt with rain and any advice you give. We have contractor bags in our packs. Last time I camped in the rain I got soaking wet haha. Any advice you have to get not get soaked would be great! Or anyone else who has advice.

Awesome video Dixie. Thanks for sharing and showing how you packed. Really helpful tips for those like me who want to do the thru hike. I've enjoyed your videos since the beginning and can't wait for what you'll be uploading next.

Been binge watching your vids. They're great! other than the 3 pairs of socks and the top and bottom to sleep in did you bring a change of clothes or did you wear the same clothes the entire trip? Thanks for the info!

How did you fly with your backpack? Did the airport make you pay to wrap it so the straps weren't dangling and wouldn't get caught up on conveyor belts? Also how did you get from Atlanta to Amicalola Falls.

Hi Dixie. Great videos. Can you do a video on how (and where to pack) your carry out waste? What system do you use to manage waste? Thanks, great work.
