The movie A WALK IN THE WOODS (2015) came out the year Scott: Dixie, I've only watched a fraction of your videos, but I've been confused about where to start at the southern end of the AT. I think I've just now figured out where the characters in the movie started.
8: 35 are they in the restaurant in the Lodge at Amicalola Falls State Park? Seems a bit more practical than starting at Nimblewill Gap (is Nimblewill Gap Rd even open to vehicles. Springer Mountain parking for the AT seems reasonable, but then officially one must hike south to the Springer Mountain terminus, then turn around and hike back. 9: 48 and 11: 48 I guess they are still in the state park, a tiny bit north of the Lodge.
Starting at someplace like the Amicalola Falls SP Lodge seems so much more practical than some random dirt road. One could fly into Georgia and take Uber (or perhaps the Lodge has a bus) to the Lodge.

7: 15 Ouch, I quit after one week and felt like quite a loser. I made the really common mistake of overdoing it, my knees are still giving me trouble a year later. I hated that I had to quit, and I hated even more that I was happy to go home. I blame my little old dog for that eagerness to get back home. The way I thought about it was, I'm missing 6+ months of her few remaining years being in pain, drenched and crying on a mountain (my knees were in so much pain the day before I left omg. I didn't see as now being worth it. I hope to one day try again. Thanks for the video Dixie!

O crap. I keep only a rain cover for my pack. Thank goodness i havent gotten stuck outside in the rain i would have been screwed. Thanks for that you literally just saved me from what could have been an ugly situation. Ill just go cheap and use a garbage bag to line my pack. I purchased many dry bags but i only use it when out on the water. Now that i know my rain cover is useless ill just use it with a garbage bag liner until it breaks. I really like my EMS pack with an internal frame. Very comfy and never let me dowm (knock on wood) hefty hefty hefty

Do you have to have permits in order to do these and to camp wherever you stop even if you don't make it to your destinationlike you're supposed to because you got too tired or worn out so you stopped anywhere do you have to have permits? Cuz here in Seattle Washington we have a drawing in order to be able to do any hiking like this like the Appalachian trail and the other I can't remember what the other hikes are called lol

Hi, thanks a lot for your videos: the seed is craking its shell in me. About movies: i'm french, and i like saint jacques. la mecque, a story going on the camino of course. More about people, how to connect, how to like other humans; ) not the adventurous hiking like the AT, but still leave home, walk, walk, walk

Thank you, thank you so much for the comments about overweight women hiking the trail, as an overweight woman who's thinking about thru hiking I have been quite concerned about this. The fact that you've seen others make it so far has really made it seem possible for me. I've decided, I'm going for it!

That's so cool that you walked into REI a newb in February and and in March you were making tracks. So awesome. I did the same with kayaking 20 years ago. and two decades later I've got about 30K miles under my boats and half way know what I'm doing. As you already know. you just have to be in love with it.

19: 00 I would be ready to toss her off a cliff.
So you say weight etc. is not an issue, but what about pains when walking? I want to but I can't walk super far without pains and it is definetly holding me back + discouraging me from doing much of it

In the book, his wife was fine with it, but it was himself that printed off stories about bear attacks and all the dangers of the trail. Funny how the movie turned it around to be the woman all concerned and trying to talk the man out of it.
