Hiking During The Coronavirus Pandemic (Plus An Update On My Thru-hike) smileyhappyradio: The truth is, if you like to be alone, have someone re-supplying you, sending you packages, and your not real social anyway, its fine to thru hike. But if you want a tramily experience, it might be challenging in this time. But if you were to just hike, and keep to yourself, you would not pose much risk to anyone, unless something happened, and you needed rescue, which is unlikely. Its not a year to be social on trail, which kind of ruins the experience considerably. The people you meet is part of the whole experience I think, helping each other cross rivers, sharing food, and having fun. Thru hikers are away from society for the most part, and less a risk, than pretty much anyone else in society, since they are truly isolated. I wasn't ready to thru hike this year, so hoping by the time I am, this will be over. I plan on Catalina Trail, a section of the PCT, and Tahoe Rim, as possibilities. The john Muir looks advanced, I may do that one, prior to trying the PCT. I plan to hike the AT starting in late March, as my first thru hike, in the green tunnel! I live in CA, but have family in Virginia and New England who could resupply me. I take that all into account, on thinking that might be my first thru hike. On the other hand, the PCT is pretty close to where I live, so maybe that may be the first one. I don't want to leap frog. Wow this year was the year for the PCT, low snow, hoping its like that when I hike it, which I plan to, someday.

I did a thruhike of the AT so I know what it means to people. From some of the comments it appears there are a lot of people who do not feel this is a serious virus and we should not be taking the measures we are to stop It. My son and his wife are physicians on the front line fighting this virus. I would give up all the memories I have of my hike and the possibility of any future hike just to know that my son would get to see his children grow up.

Since Earl hiked North first, northbound treks always get the publicity and fewer consider the other direction and when the other direction hikes can start(hint: it's not for a couple of months. Okay, the Pinhoti trail is probably doable all winter in either direction(autumn is a colorful time to hike, but so many hikers have such tunnel vision when planning a hike, they don't see the alternatives for the what if. scenarios.

Well this virus has put a lot of plans on hold. I already changed my hiking plans for the Shenandoah. The only thing I can do is ride my bike at home or go to my friends farm to hike on and or camp out. It's safe no one around and I can test my gear. I will be so glad when this blows over. Take care all and be safe. Dixie please keep creating the Videos. I value your input. Besides it keeps me sane.

The Italian government prohibits us from leaving home from March 9th until May 3rd. Many are no longer able to work and earn.
The police fine us and report us criminally if we go out.
The situation here is crazy, not for the virus but for the decisions taken by politicians.
I see that the US approach has been much more attentive to human rights.

I've planed my retirement over 12 years including caring for my mom for the last 10. I have my van in a well known RV conversion shop that's closed like everything is. I'm on hold and frustrated as hell but I'm not at all alone in this. I'm safe, I'm happy-ish, and I'm healthy. These are the first rules of retirement nowadays. Stay safe folks.

I'm a PA state employee and we got shut down indefinitely. I was hoping to take advantage of time off to hike and camp. Well, definitely not getting on the AT under current situation, and ALL PA State Parks are also shut down. Can you say hiking and camping in the PA wilderness? Aka stealth camping.

Just stay home and exercise and expand your mind. This is a great time to work on your mental toughness and where self control may not have been a necessary skill, this is the time to improve on that. A lot of outdoor people seem to lack that skill. And control your paranoia.

There is no virus and viruses are not contagious in the first place. It's a simulation, see Event 201 and Covid-19 TTX Simulation and social distancing is about surveillance, you will never get sick being close to anyone. Breathing on people does not make them sick.

I am from PA, but used to work for a company that had me travelling to Alabama every month or two (Florence/ Muscle Shoals. They wanted me to move down there, but I chose not to for various reasons, it's too flat there and too hot for this PA mountain boy.
