My Gear For A Day Hike GrnXnham: My wife and I ditched the map and compass years ago. We each carry a GPSr now. People keep telling us that They can fail. Then you'll be in trouble! Well, we've had several different GPSr units over the last 17 years and we are still waiting for one to fail! Hasn't happened, yet. But just in case one of them were to fail, we always carry two units with extra batteries. A phone as a GPSr is a fail, IMHO, because battery life is garbage with a phone.

I'm in Oregon and was going to just get a fleece I could layer under my waterproof shell. While I don't plan on backpacking in the Winter, mornings and nights are pretty much always on the colder side here even in the summer. Would a puffy be worth it, in your opinion? I'm sort of leaning toward it being overkill and less cozy, but the puffy is lighter weight.

A firearm. I always carry a firearm. For navigation, I have the Gaia GPS topo map app on my iPhone and iPad. You can record your track, so you can always backtrack your way out. And recording your track means it gets saved and that allows you to easily find that particular trail in the future should you want to walk it again.

My InReach Explorer+ goes with me everywhere. I've used the SOS button once (which pings 911 by satellite) when I rolled up on a one-car accident (dude was OK but his car was munched. I also use a hydration pack with 2-3 liters of water. It may be overkill when it's cool but I'd rather have it and not need it.

I did a day hike last year and it turned out to be hotter than expected and the trail was more demanding than originally anticipated. I ran out of water 1/2 way back to the parking area and all I could do was think of something to drink for the last few miles. I now carry a filter system regardless of where I hike.

After awhile I go nowhere without water filter. Tiny fuel cell. Coffee/tea. Food. If Sierras baklava hat gloves compressed down jacket/vest basically make sure I can cover my entire body at night in Wilderness anywhere. Space blankets. Plural they weigh nothing. 14 to 17 pounds of stuff.

As a mom of four boys, my day pack is a little bigger. I do encourage my kids to carry as much of their own gear as possible. However, with four clumsy boys. my first aid kit needs to be a bit more substantial! Love your videos and thank you for all the encouragement and ideas!

I like my patagonia wind shirt in summer rather than a jacket. Other than that, most of my stuff is fairly similar. Sometimes a set of gardening type gloves because the scrub here is quite thick and often spikey if we're on disused tracks or going off track.

Emergency sleeping bag to put inside your tent-like rain gear. Fire gear? Even if not cooking I always have a pot, like a canteen cup. Band aid first aid kits drive me nuts. Minimum is a bandage roll and some antiseptic. Military wound bandage is best.

I hike with camera equipment on occasion and what I have found to work is to loosen your camera strap enough to where you can carry your camera at your hip like a purse, might not work for you but I just wanted to throw it out there.
