My fav quilt is my Hammock Gear Econ Burrow wide. It has some great features and was only a little over half of the price you paid for that EE. And mine is 20 degrees. Two other pieces of must-have gear for me are my trekking poles (I don't use any special ones. Just some Coleman poles I got from Target a few years back) and my merino Injinji socks to keep my toes happy. :)

IMO, there is no budget sleeping pad, boots, tent, or pack, IMO. Why rebuy when you can be comfortable from the start. IMO, it is very difficult to sell used budget items even at giveaway prices when you can buy used quality items for the same cost as new budget items. IMO the most essential item is a PLB. Don't ever leave home without it. Never can tell when you need it.

Dixie, I have a grayl water filter that is a favorite. In fact, I give all my friends one just to keep in their cars when they travel. I've used it with great success on the trail, and the water is great; also filters heavy metals. Its an all in one for a small amount of water or to fill up extra bottles. Check it out at REI

I love my Enlightened Equipment Revelation quilt! I switched from a mummy bag to a quilt and have been a happy sleeper since. I have a Sea to Summit Women's Comfort Light insulated pad and it's wonderful. One thing I must take with me is my Sea to Summit Aeros Ultralight inflatable pillow.

Favorite pieces of gear like in always with me when outdoors?
#1 My whistle. Upgraded to a titanium one but have always carried a whistle.
#2 My SAK Dutch Army issue. It's a model Pioneer but a bit stronger.
## My compass. It's light weight, it floats and has a mirror for signaling.

Hey Dixie, Heading home from an isolated Florida vacation. Birmingham now, wish we could stop and say Hi! Stay safe. Gonna miss these high 80 temps. Luv your video.
What's with all these football looking things along the road? Does Alabama have armadillos?

re: your hips. if you have an entrenching tool(aka a spade/shovel, dig a small hole or trench where you expect to sleep. this is an old cowboy trick from way back when. i know it worked for me when i didn't have a tent.

Totally agree with you about the Dr. Scholls insoles. I've had PF in both feet and the insoles make a huge difference. I wear them in all my shoes. The insoles and Altra Lone Peaks are a match made in heaven.
