Pleasantly surprised that VW didnt neuter the GTI engine and drive train for the GLI. Given that, electronic tuning of the engine and the DSG should give it the same significant boosts in HP and torque and custom shift points of the transmission available for the GTI. (Contrary to rumor, neither upgrade eliminates the VW six year warranty) Personally, I prefer the GTIs more versatile hatchback design with more room for my big dog and more rear headroom. On the other hand, it appears the GLI may have more rear legroom. I must admit that the GLIs digital cockpits eye candy makes me a little envious. Rumor had it that the US spec GTI would have it in 2019 but that didnt happen. Looks like it will be 2020 for that. For those who ride the Washington State ferries, the GTI is eligible for a fare discount while the GLI at seven inches longer is not. (Hows that for an advantage that will make a difference to very, very few buyers) All in all, both the GTI and GLI offer classic designs. Neither will appeal to 14 year old or older boy racers whose taste is that of a 14 year old but each will age well.

FWIW I was all set to get a GTI until I heard about this new GLI. I typically prefer sedans over hatchbacks (just my opinion) even though I currently own a hatchback and was excited for this new GLI. However, when I went to the Chicago Auto Show yesterday to check this car out, I was a bit. underwhelmed. I liked the space and the overall design but the car didnt seem as polished and loved by the designers as the GTI next to it. The interior materials felt cheaper and the wheels need another inch or so. Even things like how the GTI has the hydraulic hood and the GLI needs that very, very wimpy stick to hold its hood up. I honestly thought I could break it with two fingers. Those plastic fins by where the fog lights should be were K-Mart quality and even the door handles felt a bit weaker. Bit of a shame because the trunk space is loads better than the GTI (really) and the passenger space in the back is much better. I went to the show set on the GLI but left thinking Im still better off with a GTI. Guess that could change once we get some GLI pricing info and get to drive it but I guess well see.

Its just my lifestyle, but the GTI fits me better. I need cargo room for the occasional gig and camping / hiking trip. Im a long-time GTI owner, and while I like the idea of a small sporty sedan, the GLI is a bit too similar to the GTI to convince me to switch. If it looked more different from the GTI on the inside, I might be tempted. Still a nice lookin car, though. Could have used a better color.

a pretty big improvement for their performance compact car? dont you remember the previous GLI with 200 hp was also a really good car and no even mention their golf vw know how to make sport good performance cars, just a regular jette that is compare with a corola, perform way better that the corola, nissan sentra or others elantra,

Yeah, but. gLi, Grand Luxury Injection, seems to be stylized more towards Sport than Comfort. Instead of driving around town like youre on the run from police, some of us arent in a perpetual state of rush and just want a comfy ride that floats over RR-tracks and potholes: Luxury.

I agree with Alex that the GLI has more Audi DNA inside. So for someone who want an affordable Audi the GLI is the way to go. But I prefer the hatches for more of that sportiness feeling. Sedans are on the boring side of the car spectrum even if theyre disguised into a sports outfit.

It severely bugs me that the GLI doesnt have the red trim on the front grille flow into the headlight assembly like on the GTI and the last-generation GLI. Whats even worse is that there is a strip of chrome trim in there that lines up perfectly with the trim out front.

That side profile is simply awful The proportions are all wrong as if way too many executives and no designers were involved. Even the tiny wheel openings look silly. The poor Jetta is ruined, looks more like a Hyundai / Korean car with every new generation Shame on you VW.

Back when I had two kids in car seats I choose a vr6 Jetta. I could haul the pack and play, swing, and our luggage. If you consistently carry back seat passengers and need cargo space get the gli. If you dont choose whatever makes your heart go pitter-patter.

The GTI is a blast to drive but I personally dislike the looks of the car, so I was pretty bumbed out to find that the GLI got the short end of the stick in previous generations. So Im thrilled to see them finally give the full package to the car.
