2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Subie With A Plug

Subarus first plug-in hybrid may not have the EV range that Subies EV hopeful were asking for, but on the other hand I hope we see this system under the hood of ever Subaru model soon. The PHEV systems only compromise is a reduction in cargo space and the loss of a spare tire in the Crosstrek but this could likely be fixed in future models. Delivering 35 MPG in hybrid mode and up to 17 miles of EV range, this isn for shoppers that want to drive EV only but rather for folks wanting to shift some of their consumption to electricity while retaining the classic Subaru off-roadiness

Alex - Can you elaborate more on your experience with the B mode of increased regenerative braking? Is it something you can hypermile with it, like if you see a light change 1/4 mile down the road in front of you, can you shift into B and let it kind of coast up to the light, and shift back into D when the light changes? Thanks, I liked this review. For someone like me that drives sub-65mph nearly all the time, and a 10 mile commute through a 55 mph freeway and very urban city, this seems great. I would have liked to have this offered in a Premium trim version so I dont have to spend around 40, 000 on the car. I also would like for the residuals to be a little higher - it seems to be pretty expensive on a lease right now. I like that the RAV4 offers more trim options to pick a hybrid with, but they didnt feature a plug-in charger. I need a car to get me to and from work in the worst weather conditions, so the RAV would be off my list.

Very well done review as usual. I am trying to decide between new RAV4 hybrid and Crosstrek plugin. Leaning toward RAV4 for better mpg, more space, and local dealer support, but do live at the end of a gravel road in Montana (lots of snow) and a bit concerned about how much less capable the AWD system on RAV4 is. It would be very helpful if you had an actual quantitative test you could do on these AWD systems that would give the actual difference in AWD performance under some repeatable, real world condition. Currently have a 2004 Honda Pilot with lockable rear differential and (with good tires) it handles our situation without any problem at all. Just wondering how much worse the RAV4 hybrid will be?

I had a Ford C Max plug in hybrid made in 2013 that I traded in a 2018 Subaru Forester. This is not really any technically better than the C-max, made 7 years ago. Both just put the battery in the cargo area, and both had about same limited all electric range, both used the same Toyota hybrid drive, although ford built there own, it was a toyota design. The only advantage is the AWD on the Subaru. Another thing about hybrids that do not have Toyota written on them, is the depreciation on them is steep. The Cmax I had sold for 36000 in 2013, and and when I traded it in this year, the dealer was asking 8500 with 63000 miles on it. My biggest complaint was lack of cargo space.

i bought a 2019 gas one. everything about it is great except people getting into my back seat complain its hard to get in and out of. once your in the back seat plenty of room. That would be the one draw back. Also everyone says how the 154 hp is gutless but I raced our honda pilot and it was an even match. it has a v6 in it. so the power is average. I like the color of the hybrid blue and the blue stitching. I got the orange because i didnt like the other colors but I would of gotten the blue if they would of offered it in the blue. So one last thing. I took it out in the snow this winter and I got to say. Best car I ever driven in the snow. just amazing.

Something to keep in mind if you live in an area with very cold winter temperatures, from the owners manual of the 19 Crosstrek Hybrid: When the high voltage battery is extremely cold (below approximately 22F (30C) under the influence of the outside temperature, it may not be possible to start the hybrid system. In this case, try to start the hybrid system again after the temperature of the high voltage battery increases due to the outside temperature increase etc. So basically, if its too cold for the hybrid to operate, wait until springtime, eek.

The lacking cargo space doesnt seem that terrible. Many people in the non-hybrid Crosstrek get roof baskets/boxes for weekend use. And if your loading down for a weekend of fun its going to get worse mileage regardless. As far as the battery placement, it just wasnt in their original design plan. Having a true mechanical AWD system is part of the point of buying a Subaru for most people, simple compromise. If they were really gunning for efficiency they could have just put this in the Impreza.

Subarus decisions baffle me (and I own a 10 Forester. Regarding this Crosstrek PHEV: they knew this would use THE platform the next 8 years, so their plug-in hybrid battery. juts above the cargo floor like a 2015 Ford C-Max Energi? What Why didnt design call for battery placement under the 2nd row? Other makes do it (Kia Niro, etc) AND the tech came from Toyota (partial ownership in Subaru.

That blue shaded outline, although looks good for the continuity sake from door to dashboard or vice versa, it really worries me regarding front passenger space, especially for someone 6 feet 3 tall knee space? Same thing I noticed in Ascent. Alex does that eat into passenger space, especially knee room for taller people or with longer legs? Can someone comment on that?
