The Ariya Is The Cushy, Quiet EV Shoppers Have Been Asking For 2023 Ariya First Drive
video description
What kind of customer is able to afford a 40k+ vehicle, but doesn t care about saving 7, 500, and is willing to spend 40k+ for a Nissan instead of sub 40k for similar competition or maybe even under 30k for a Chevy?
What kind of customer is able to afford 60k+ and is willing to buy a Nissan instead of a Tesla or Cadillac?
Without a tax credit, I fear this vehicle is overpriced. Despite how good it is, I fear it will flop.
Hyundai/Kia are in a similar situation losing their tax credits, but they seem ahead of Nissan on moving production to the US. Nissan is likely lagging a year or more behind the competition on this, just like they were on getting it on sale in the US.

Eh, this is kind of an underwhelming effort from the manufacturer of the first mass-market EV. It seems like a perfectly decent car, but there is really nothing to make it special versus all the other options. Nissan really needed to do something to make up catastrophic mistakes they made on the Leaf, but they didn t.
The choice of FWD is a mistake. Choosing poor traction all the time vs reduced regeneration braking only during heavy snow/ice when the vehicle is equipped with inappropriate tires for the condition is a mistake. Anyone who has ever owned a FWD EV and driven it in the rain knows this is a mistake. EVs are light in the front end compared to a typical FWD vehicle since they don t have a gigantic metal boat anchor under the hood like an ICE vehicle. EVs are closer to 50/50 weight distribution vs 65/35 on a typical FWD vehicle. On accel, the front end goes light and you spin the tires on FWD EV. All 2WD EVs should be RWD. The regen braking excuse is a pathetic one, especially considering that most people who regularly drive in snow and ice will opt for the AWD version and have appropriate tires.

The front-end looks really good: modern, smart, sleek, space-age-y, without looking overdone or that it's trying too hard to stand out. The vast, featureless expanse at the rear doesn't look too good. Not a fan of severely sloping hatches in CUVs, but this one doesn't look too bad. The interior is good-looking and interesting, though I noticed that the panel gaps were bad. Both the glove box lid & the trick centre drawer's ) lid showed a noticeable gap of 3-4 mm. I hope this model succeeds so that 1) we can get to see some good-looking EVs and 2) Nissan survives.

Was really interested but given tech, I m not enthused beyond a test drive given what I saw on the VW electric bus but if this was a gas hybrid like a hair slower RAV4 prime then I could see it over another rogue then it could work given I have no way to charge at home. At least I can find a nearby charger for things like this. Found them by accident. No spare? Yeah that s a problem for me considering all my tire problems happened late at night. I have learned to change a tire in less time than a tow service like AAA finding me.

Great video as usual. It's a shame they didn't incorporate raised or embossed up and dow arrows for the controls, so you don't have to take your eyes off of the road. Also, please start including battery degradation figures and battery replacement costs. If the replacement cost is as high as I've been hearing, it means that car manufacturers have figured out a way to screw us all over for another 15, 000 or 20, 000 for a new battery after a few years of ownership when the range has declined too much for comfort.

Alex, I'm somewhat flummoxed at your dwelling so much on small body details--most of reviewers do--which CAN NOT be what buyers care for most. Is it because manufacturers have little to offer on capital features like: comfort, cabin noise, bumps and potholes handling, speakers performance, rigidity/rattles. Grilles, door handles, wipers speed, shape and location of lights, etc I feel take too much of your valuable time as a car expert driver. This being said, you do a better job at this than most.

Hi Alex. I have test driven the Ariya. a comment about the touch buttons. they look nice but are in a terrible lication, if you want to rest your wrist on the console when operating the screen or adjusting the volume you will invariably wind up messing up the airco settings. And I have to wonder how that touch strip will look after a year of use. ?

You did a video explaining that being built in America alone is not enough to qualify for the tax credit because it also depends on where the battery materials get sourced from, but in the video you just flatly guarantee that the Equinox will get the tax credit from the start just because it's being built in North America.

Oops tesla just removed like all the sensors, the ultrasonics one now. Still not sure how that will work in winter. Why put the charger on the passenger side? I just dont think the masses want to walk on that side then to the drivers door. Good start, but this will not sell enough to compete. IMO.

I really wish the Ariya was built in the US to qualify for the federal EV tax credit, & I really wish it offered ventilated front seats, bc I'd be considering this & comparing to an EV6 (which currently also doesn't qualify for the federal tax credit)

I like it better than the ID. 4. Regarding tax credits, I thought there's no guarantee yet that tax credits will be available for North American EVs in 2023. At least until manufacturers prove they can meet the battery requirements.

The problem that I see is that they let the LEAF languish for so long. It gave Nissan a reputation for not really wanting to pursue EVs and just treat them as compliance vehicles.

The car looks great. Very nice, clean interior. Hopefully this is a pre production model because that electric cubby and glove box, the fit and finish don't look all that great.
