If you e shopping for a full-sized SUV, Fords all-new Expedition simply has to be on your shopping list. Its more modern and more fuel efficient than the competition with good handling dynamics, a powerful twin-turbo V6 engine and a new 10-speed automatic transmission. Tow ratings are at the top of the pack and it quite simply feels newer than the Chevy, Nissan, Toyota or GMC competition

We rented a 2018 Expedition Max on a recent trip to Yellowstone. We actually had reserved a Transit, but upon arrival the Transit was in sorry shape, and the rental rep was so embarrassed as to the condition, they upgraded us to the Expedition. 5 adults and 3 kids ranging from 2nd grade to 7th grade. Im not normally a fan of large vehicles like this, but I will say the Expedition performed like a champ for the week we had it. Yellowstone is around 8, 000 feet of elevation, which doesnt help engine performance on any car. There was a bunch of construction on park roads, so quite a bit of rough road we traversed on a daily basis. Nary a squeak or rattle out of the Ford no matter the road surface. Plenty of power, even loaded with 8 of us, and on mountain roads at high elevation. Color me impressed. I couldnt justify 15 mpg give or take on a daily basis, and if I had to routinely haul 7 or 8 people, Id probably choose a minivan, as ingress/egress is far superior. But if you need to tow more than a minivan can handle, AND haul more than 6 people on a regular basis, I can see owning one of these. It was great. Quiet, solid, etc. Of course, it had better be, considering what a well equipped Expedition sells for these days. Anecdote: GM must absolutely give away their equivalent to rental agencies. We saw a dozen full size Chevy SUVs in rental service in the park for every Ford. I was surprised the imbalance was so large.

Hey Alex, i just wanted to tell you that on the cargo area, the hooks that are said to be for groceries are in fact for the double hinge cover that you found a little confusing. In this way you can put the cover over the hooks horizontally like some kind of shelf to put stuff on it and be able to reach it from the back window opening so you dont have to open the whole thing and mess around with your luggage, you can also extend a small lip on one side of the cover to prevent your stuff from falling from the shelf every time the vehicle brakes. The second position of this cover is to put it over the hooks on a vertical way so it forms like a little wall to prevent your excess baggage from falling or if you have something that could roll out from the cargo area when you open it. You are on of the best reviewers that i have encounter globally with the plus that you actually quantify and ranked every measurement, keep up the excellent work. Saludos desde Mxico amigo.

Honestly, forget minivans. This is the way to go. I know the odyssey has like 30 extra cubic feet of cargo space, but most of that comes from how low the floor is and how useful is that space really; length is where its at. Also this can tow, which is something no minivan can do well. The only deal breaker is the V6. I know this has more torque than a Yukon Denali or Tahoe RST, but the those have more power and fuel economy is about the same (6. 2L V8. I wish ford still offered this with a V8 because then Id be all over it. Also I would easily get this over a Navigator. I really dont like the styling of the Navigator or the interior and the feature content doesnt sway me much aside from the more adjustable seats

25: 20How is the Sequoia less fuel efficient than the Expedition? As you noted, Expedition achieved 15 mpg for your average weekly, Max 4WD promised 16 city 21 highway, 18mpg combined. 3mpg below the promised combine of 18mpg. I am surprised you gave this truck a B grading when FORD is clearly lying. Ford always lies about their mpg figures. You need to call them out on that Alex. I bet you the Sequoia would easily achieve 15mpg+, and its 13/17. My 2007 Lexus LX 470 has a rating of 13/17. Last week I took a road trip and the highway it achieves 19. 5mpg.

Great review, Alex. We bought a 2018 Ford Expedition Limited 4WD two weeks ago to replace my 2008 GMC Envoy Denali 4X4. I love it and more importantly, my wife loves it. I considered all of the competition. Once I figured out that I could afford one, the decision was pretty simple. And Ive been getting just over 20 MPG with it - probably just how and where we drive. I didnt think that Id care for the auto stop/start system but it works so smoothly that I dont mind it at all.

Alex, You are the greatest automotive journalist since the great Csaba Csere of Car & Driver and The New York Times. Both of you are fascinating and detailed in your approach. Both take a literate and erudite approach to your work. Id love to see you have him as a guest one day on your show. It would be like seeing a Rolls drag race a Bentley. Keep up the good work guy. We need people like you

Im curious a friend of mine has a platinum edition pickup truck and he stated that the windshield is an acoustic glass and it has double pane windows on both the driver and passenger side. Is this the case with the Platinum Edition on this SUV? As an audiophile this has me intrigued and might explain why the noise level is so low in this SUV.

What? No spare tire rating? Alex. tisk. tisk. tisk. Still. I would suspect I would prefer the Durango w/V8 4 wheel drive, maybe the top model perhaps? The expedition is priced well for what it is. But really, what is the market for this max version? Towing for sure but after that? The Dodge is a more attractive looking vehicle to my eyes.

Good video. My Wife loves her 18 Expedition Max Platinum. I wanted the Navigator but its my wifes vehicle and she said she thought the Expedition was better looking lol. But so far its been a good SUV no problems. I think automakers sometimes wait to update some of their vehicles because they tend to make more money on older platforms.

Ford has the potential to dominate the full size SUV market with this and the new Navigator Theyve always been mechanically and capably better than the GM models, its just that theyve never enjoyed the market share for whatever reason If Ford continues to market these rigs right and pump up the production, they can own this segment
