Pretty big deal for me personally about Android Auto being absent. Any 2018+ car that doesnt support it is off my shopping list. Im buying a luxury sports coupe in the 70k range sometime after August, and so far theres nary a Lexus, Infiniti or BMW my list, despite all three brands having otherwise quite compelling models in my price range (especially the RC, and to a lesser extent the M2. Arbitrary decision? Heck yeah, but arent most car buying decisions? And hey, its my hard-earned money, and a price segment thats taken me nearly a decade of savings to be able to afford. On higher end cars, infotainment is so integrated into the vehicles functionality, its no longer just a matter of swapping in an aftermarket head unit to add missing (or new) features, at least not easily, especially on systems that have a tablet-style display that cant easily be retired.

I have a 2013 Toyota Avalon with the Entune connection and it leaves me wanting more. When I heard the introduction of Apple Car Play I was optimistic in selling my current car and buying the 2019 Avalon. Oops, I am not an Apple user so this is a great disappointment. Having recently bought a new 2018 Kia Sorento for my wife finds me a bit spoiled when I drive it. She has both features and it works well. The Korean brands are looking very bright at the moment. They have 12 months before I make a final decision. Thanks for the review.

Hi Alex Thanks for the review. Is it just those 2019 models getting the new Entune 3. 0 system or do you think all 2019 models will get it? Im considering a Highlander Hybrid or RAV4 Hybrid (in addition to a couple of other non-Toyota models) but Apple CarPlay would be nice to have. Also, is Toyotas Nav still stubborn? In the past, it would try to route me somewhere I knew would not be the best route but it would keep pushing me to go its preferred route long after it was the fastest route by its own estimation (hence the stubbornness.

Thanks for this overview Alex. As many others have said, the lack of Android Auto makes it a non-starter for me. Also, do we really need another app ecosystem in addition to Apple + Google? Now developers have to include Entune support in their app in addition to CarPlay/AA and have it listed on a Toyota App Catalog? That catalog will be niche at best compared to apps that support CarPlay and AA - I think Toyota is making a strategic mistake trying to go their own way with built-in apps.

There was article from Bloomberg not too long ago rumoring that Android auto is coming, but had few details. I did a test drive today at my dealer and asked them if they had more details. They confirmed that it is coming, and all vehicles with entune 3. 0 will be able to get update for it. The salesman said they just recently went through a training for it. Didnt have a date, but said it will be this year

Easier to add a motion sensor with photocell for your driveway lights than it is to set up smart lights that you have to give voice commands to turn on and off when you get home. My driveway lights turn on automatically when I get home at night and then turn off automatically a few minutes later and it doesnt require talking to Alexa or any internet connection to make it work.

Android auto is not currently in the works. During talks between Toyota and Google, They werent able to come to an agreement because Toyota wanted to give consumers more control over their data to protect their privacy. Google refused to agree. Apple was happy to agree and so Toyota will only be equipping their vehicles with Apple CarPlay for the foreseeable future.

Good review but the omission of Android Auto will have me look elsewhere. I have a car on the used market right now and as soon as it sells Ill be looking to replace it. Too many choices out there to have to settle for this. Either release both Apple Car Play and Android Auto at the same time or dont release it at all.

Official Toyota explanation is they omitted AA because their data collection policy. But, real reason is Toyota and Amazon deal to integrate Alexa in their upcoming infotainment systems. That precludes any Google integration on their brand products, at least in the foreseeable future.

If my understanding is correct Apple CarPlay is generated by the phone itself, it just requires coding to allow the usb to allow video transfer, where as the android auto is software that has to be added to the head unit itself instead of video through like Apple CarPlay
