More Power + The Best Fuel Economy Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid First Drive

It turns out that sometimes, being powered by a Prius powertrain is good. Case in point: the new Corolla Cross Hybrid shares its new eAWD hybrid system with the new Prius. Although rated for 42 MPG, we managed to average 50 MPG without trying terribly hard. Highway numbers should fall closer to 40 MPG, but any way you slice it, the new Corolla Cross Hybrid is an interesting alternative to the best-selling Crosstrek. It offers more power and significantly better fuel economy in a more boxy package. Mark: I think the Corolla Cross is pretty dull, but in this form it's just about the perfect modern economy car for most buyers. Aside from a lackluster interior, I can't see anything significantly wrong with this, and even the interior is acceptable for a relatively inexpensive car, and would have been premium twenty years ago.
If Toyota doesn't sell massive numbers it's because they either aren't making enough or haven't figured out how to market them. For most people this will be just as functional as a RAV4 Hybrid, and save money. It's not as if the RAV4 interior is any nicer or much roomier.

This will probably be the new best car for Uber Drivers, or anyone really that needs good dailu transportation.
The new Prius looks amazing. but the rear headroom is not good. or the storage. This will fit better for that need, and be more efficient than a Rav4 Hybrid.
Oddly I would want one without the AWD. I have No need for it where I live. It's an option in the Rav 4, too bad they did not make it an option in this car. Would save some weight and unneeded complication.

Hi Alex, thank you for uploading such informative and helpful videos so consistently!
How do you think this compares with the Niro PHEV? In Canada, it seems like the Niro PHEV would be the better buy since it gets a 5000 rebate while this does not, so I was trying to convince my friend to go with the Niro PHEV since he can charge at home and AWD is not necessary. However, after hearing you give the Corolla Cross Hybrid such high praise, I'm not so sure anymore.

I've been waiting for this one. I liked the idea behind the original Corolla Cross being lower cost and slightly smaller than a RAV4 (I like driving slightly smaller vehicles in general and am in the market for a practical CUV, but reading peoples' experiences with the 169 horsepower engine put me off. Hopefully the additional horsepower with the hybrid electric engine/motor makes up for that. The fuel economy is extremely nice, too!

Hi Alex! Maybe I'm biased since I own now the Kia Niro EX 2023 thanks to your great reviews, but I give up the horse power of the cross or the new prius for the technology that the niro has. This Toyota look more like an ikea of cars (very shallow thought I know, but they look so basic. Just can't justify the price.
P. s. I'm not expert in cars whatsoever, so please don't batch me for my silly thoughts.

This is going to sell like hot cakes. I've mentioned this before, I wished Toyota would've brought back the Matrix name plate.
Also, this will eat the HRV's lunch. Not only did Honda make it slower with worse MPG, it won't even offer a hybrid any time soon. Epic fail.

Another great review as usual. This engine has Toyota's D4S fuel injection system, yes? Next time could you show us or tell us if Toyota did the same correction on this model as they did for the Rav4 hybrids due to cable corrosion? Thanks, keep up the good work.

Hard to get over this stark interior feels like the driver is being penalized for choosing a Corolla. The regular cross has a terrible front passenger seat, super uncomfortable. Given this really isn t going offroad the new prius makes much more sense.

Alex, Wow, the Cross Hybrid is finally here! Toyota must be relieved they managed to beat their initial MPG estimate. Now Toyota buyers have to decide whether they want to be on the interminable waiting list for the RAV4 Hybrid or Hybrid Cross.

This will just be another great car that Toyota doesn't have on lots and when they do, they will be asking 5K over sticker. None of these new cars really excite me until they are actually available to buy and for MSRP.

A friend of mine is in the market for a small crossover, and when she called a few of her local Toyota dealers, the waitlist for a Corolla Cross was significant (small refundable deposit + 12-18 month wait)

The only thing about the design is the front grill, why so angry looking? Hoping Toyota can produce enough of these. I can imagine a pickup version coming to compete against the Ford Maverick.

The amount of foam under the cargo area of this and the Prius Prime is ridiculous. They could have easily made more storage space, even if they don't want the weight penalty of a space tire.

Hybrids are way better than EVs. Especially if it s a Toyota power train. I think the Cross is a perfect size. It s not as small like Corolla but not as big as a RAV4, perfect in between.

50 mpgs wow! I've got 49 mpg with my Rav4 Hybrid a couple of time, don't think Ive ever crossed 50.
One question: is that 2 litre engine the Atkinson cycle variant?
