Yep, The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Was Worth The Wait! (Mostly)

The all-new Tacoma will delight and outrage an equal share of Taco fans with massive changes for 2024. The V6 is dead, a hybrid is optional, full-time 4WD makes a debut, the 2-door XtraCab is baaaack, and long live the manual transmissions! Also: Watch out GMC, the Limited trim is coming for your Canyon Denali. Let s talk major points first. It ll be the only midsize truck in America featuring: a 2-door/2-seat trim, optional hybrid, power running boards, power tailgate, adaptive suspension, 14-inch LCD infotainment system, and a true center differential. (Although not all in the same model) Next, the controversy: The V6 is dead. All models, all trims get a 2. 4L turbo borrowed from the Lexus RX and Toyota Highlander. It s been revised for truck duty and is mated to an 8-speed RWD transmission (or that 6-speed manual. The engine comes in for power levels. The Tacoma SR will get a 228 HP / 243 lb-ft tune while the rest of the lineup bumps the engine to 278 / 317. Except if you get the manual when it drops a hair down to 270 / 310. Or if you add in the hybrid system which adds an electric motor between the torque converter and the transmission to bump total power to 326 HP and 465 lb-ft. Honestly, the turbo makes a great deal of sense. It adds much needed torque, will likely improve fuel economy a hair, and the 2. 4L turbo is soon to be Toyota s highest volume engine in the USA meaning likely lower repair and parts costs long-term. On the downside, if you want a V6 you have a limited number of choices now: Ridgeline, Gladiator and Frontier. On the inside, the Tacoma gets a complete redesign. The four-door cab is about the same length as before but they have increased the height a bit and redesigned the seats. The result is a much more comfortable seating position and the new seats offer 4-way lumbar for the driver and front passenger in some trims. The suicide-door Access Cab is gone, replaced by the XtraCab. The 2-door XtraCab features two seats with extra storage behind the seating area and will only come in SR, SR5 and TRD Prerunner trims. The Tacoma Limited is perhaps the most interesting model in the lineup. In addition to nicer interior parts and gadgets (like a full color heads up display and ventilated seats, it ll offer Toyota s first American market truck with a full-time 4WD system (hybrid only. Unlike the 4-Auto systems in the American trucks however, Toyota borrowed a Torsen center differential from the 4Runner. It ll also get power running boards, gobs of chrome and a segment-first adaptive suspension.

Its interesting to see the rose colored glasses some folks have gained for the outgoing V6 with this debut. I don't think anyone can really look objectively at the 2GR-FKS and say it was well-matched to the Tacoma's weight, or purpose. This was a lengthy stopgap measure between the petrol-swigging 1GR, which did a better job of producing bottom end torque, to improve fuel economy a bit. but the 2GR had to rev too high to do much. and a new era. These turbo-4s WILL be better at getting off the line and don't sacrifice anything horsepower wise.
It's 2023. We've got strong turbos and powerful hybrids. Want a V6 - head over to Nissan and get a solid but aged vehicle. God knows they need the money.

I think I like what they did with it mechanically and I m glad they fixed the complete failure that was the previous seating position and comfort (I haven t fit properly in a Tacoma since like 2004 since I have a long torso) but WOW this thing is ugly! Weird proportions, comically awful styling (looks like something that someone who design to make fun of American trucks, pointless fake vents and gaudy trim everywhere, yikes. But, I m sure they ll still sell a ton of them because people are buying the current gen like crazy even though they weren t great.

Alex did a great job on the review but Toyota really missed again first with the tundra now with the Tacoma. Very little rear seat room I think the plastic throughout this cabin is a huge miss. Moreover, this is probably going be a 50, 000 plus truck, really no excuse for the hard scratchy plastic surfaces. Happy to see the front seats have been improved slightly but again I think the GM and the new Ford product appear to be far superior particularly the ford.

4 cylinder turbo engines in a truck is an immediate dealbreaker. Your not going to see trouble-free space shuttle miles out of this drivetrain. The styling is better than the overwrought cartoonish look of the new Tundra but still Tundra enough to be a turn-off. As a Toyota truck owner of 20 years, I just bought a new Nissan Frontier with its naturally aspirated V6. Toyota really let me down w crappy turbo engines and Saturday morning cartoon styling

I'm really interested to see if Toyota releases a Maverick competitor. I heard rumors they might once but then never heard anything more about it. If they do then I'd happily cancel my Maverick order because it's been 2 years and now Ford is getting shady about the price lock so I'm betting they won't honor it. Ford said it will be about another year before they can deliver my Maverick so let's see what happens in the meantime.

The current Tacoma had odd proportions. This is much improved.
That rear seat really is a mistake to be so small (kind of like the striking Acura TLX.
Body-on-frame is 20th century tech. They should have pivoted to unibody. My 09 Ridgeline feels like it s carved from a single piece of metal. It s shocking how well it drives.
Anywho, big improvement and they ll sell lots.

It will be interesting to see if the 2025 4Runner also gets a manual transmission option, because the new Taco has one. To amortize the cost of R&D for the new Tacos manual, it would make economic sense for Toyota to offer more manuals on other models, to ensure they get a ROI,
and drive down the over all build cost, due to economies of scale.

This thing looks awesome. I particularly like the displays, steering wheel, seats in the TRD Pro, recovery hooks, wheels, front, front 3/4, air compressor and the generator. It screams testosterone, with the exception of the rear seat room. The rear seats are still for children. If I were still in 8th grade this would be the pickup for me

I agree, for me, it would be the Limited! WOW! What was that thing Ford just announced? ha ha Kiss my grits! After having owned 10 Trucks from every brand from 2500 Suburbans, Cummins Turbo Diesel, F-150 ICE and Lightning EV, Taco TRD Sport, Tundra. I mean everything, except a Nissan product, and the Lightning went bye bye several months back.

I think Toyota has knocked it out of the park, we get a really nice looking interior, power running boards and a powered liftgate, things which you can't get on any other midsize truck and you cant forget 465lb-ft or torque, this is an absolute game changer in my opinion. It is also the best looking midsize truck in my opinion

A flaw I do see if the piano black all over the outside, especially the fender flares
Looks good in the showroom, but that won't age well
The Limited also has limited appeal, as a luxury vehicle.
Rear room is tight, no pano-roof, fake wood, fake leather and no interior color options

Still no Auto 4WD. Immediate deal breaker for me. And the full-time 4WD on the Limited doesn't cut it either. I want 2WD for summer driving and Auto 4WD for winter driving. Those are the two modes used almost all the time. 4HI and 4LO only get used in extreme conditions.

I wish they would quit with the Torsen system only being available on Limited trims. I don't want the chrome, the worse approach and departure angles, the high price tag and features I don't need. I want Torsen as a standalone option in a low to mid trim.

Of course Alex is here in Hawaii with the new Toyota Tacoma truck. It's the state car here.
If it could, the Honolulu Police Department would have it on their police patrol vehicle list, but almost everyone is using the Toyota 4Runner SUV.

I dunno man. I am a lifelong yota driver but these pickups are at the might as well get the full size category. I had a 2020 taco and it was fun off road, but really cramped inside. I am EV these days but I am certain these will sell very well!
