I Got Hands On With Volvo's Sexy New EX30, Volvo's Most Affordable New EV

On sale on 2024 as the 2025 Volvo EXC30, the new entry level Volvo has a lot going on. It'll be one of the fastest Volvo models even in base trim. 268 HP RWD will be standard with a 5. 1 second 0-60 run while the dual motor model drops that down to 3. 4 seconds thanks to a whopping 422 ponies. The interior is Scandinavian Chic with a focus on sustainability, recyclability and low emissions. Volvo says in fact that the EX30 will have the lowest carbon footprint of any model they have ever produced. More interesting? The base price seems oddly low. It'll be about 35, 000 starting or about 36, 500 after destination. That's less than a 2023 Lexus UX hybrid and significantly less than a Genesis GV60. Mercedes EQB? Way, way more expensive. Clearly there are tradeoffs, like only one set of window switches and only a central LCD, but I think I could live with that. sylvain: A smaller carbon footprint for this EX-30? I hope so. It's the smallest EV of the bunch!
Nevertheless Volvo admits that builiding an EX-30 generates 18 (metric) tons of CO2. It's HUGE! And this is for the basic version with a single motor.
That's what happens when you decide to build in China! It's less expensive but creates more greenhouse gases.

I certainly hope they ironed out performance below 10% when going into limp mode since it is on a new platform. Its reduced performance is downright scary which is why I cancelled my original reservation for tge c40. Also, I doubt that dual motor will do 260 miles on that tiny 64kwh battery. An 800v might have been advantageous for faster charging since the battery is small. My GV60 has about 10more kwh and tops 220 miles on 100%. Then again, I m not a hypermiler.

I wish they utilized space efficiency better and made the front just slightly shorter, also face value the efficiency doesn t seem to be amazing for the RWD, just 4. 3 MI/ KWH seems average, for such a small vehicle you would expect closer to 5. Everything else about it seeks fantastic. Considering a larger rwd model 3 w an LFP battery is right around 4. 5, and a much larger lucid air is 4. 4

I like most of it, but that flecked plastic looks like rustoleum garage floor epoxy paint. Doesn't exactly scream high end. I also think that if they're going to ditch a dashboard display for the driver, it should have a HUD for the driver.
Can this be had without the glass roof? I can't find out on their site if that's an option or if the glass roof is the only way it's made.

As an industrial design I'm a big fan of this interior. The exterior is great too. The proportions are a bit stout to be sure, but that can't be avoided in the 2020's. This could be my first EV. Very appealing size, price and design. Also, the wool seats are awesome. Mini did wool seats for a while and they were amazing.

I like that rear end look quite a bit more than the traditional look of the rest of Volvo s lineup. It loses that weird excessively tall brake light look that the others all have. Still this is just too small for me and not enough range. I really like the design of this inside and out though.

I would want to know how much to replace that front fascia. It is gonna look real bad quickly and I doubt PPF will be able to protect it. Dislike the rear wiper assembly that doesn't cover the entire blade. Wonder if the trailing edge of the hood contributes to cavitation effect.

I put my deposit down on the first day they were taking orders. I'm really looking forward to this car. I already have a Volvo C40 and a Mach-e. The glass roof gets a lot of hate, but it's not a problem at all even in 110 degree Texas heat.

It's 100% Chinese EV (Geely) with a Volvo label, why do we want to help an enemy (non-friend?
Volvo EV's are not good, a neighbor's EX40 electric lasted about three years with many problems.

I realy like the EX 30 and you should buy it. It's produced together with it's cousin the Smart #1 at a Geely factory in China where there will also be build a version for Zeekr on that plattform.

They could've built these cars in Mexico and passed the savings down to the customers. I am not sure how much they save by having these cars built in China and ship them here.

The Short Range iS A DEAL BRAKER! The Chinese are super CHEAP ON BATTERY SIZE! I HATE THE RAMGE OF A NISSAN LEAF! You buy it! I wouldn t even review this piece of junk!
reply

How can they do a Cross Country with the range so low? It s crazy they don t even offer a high range battery. You can t go far off the interstate even with a 300mi EV.

Ok. Please explain the mission difference between Volvo and Polestar? I thought Polestar was going to be EV only and Volvo would focus on ICE, hybrids, and PHEVs.

6: 11 exactly the confirmation i needed. canceled deposit as i do not want first batch without nacs. we live in a charging wasteland. 2025 it is!

There are so many luxury EVs on the market now. But just give me a cheap, economy EV I can drive to work everyday and I'll be happy.

Southerners like me do not appreciate the giant glass roof with no sun shade. We're going to BAKE. Glass roof needs to be an option.

I never thought volvo would be the company to deliver a quality EV below 40k. I always associated volvos with higher costs
