What's the perfect daily driver If you dreamt up your perfect 10 car garage, how likely is it you'd have an Audi RS6 or a Range Rover in it Something luxurious, fast and comfortable, to fulfil all the needs or when a McLaren F1 or Ferrari F40 just wouldn't do the job. And if you had one dream daily, what would it be That's the question the latest Autocar Vodcast, Middle-Aged Tread, sets out to answer. Join your hosts Matt Prior and James Disdale as they get two of the choicest versions of Audi and Range Rover - one with a twin-turbocharged V10, the other with a supercharged V8, and try to decide which would take a spot in their dream garage. For more like this, find Autocar including its entire 129-year archive over at themagazineshop. com/autocar.

I’m lucky enough to have a dream garage with Ferrari, McLaren, GR Yaris and M240, etc but can assure you the L405 Rangie is the one that is driven everyday and for all events. It’s a mobile skip, carry building materials, logs but with a vacuum and wipe down it’s off to the Opera, The Ivy or the Alps what’s not to like (well other than the massive deprecation); indeed just cancelled order for new L460 version purely based on the horrendous loss I’ve suffered on this MY2020 car. If JLR refuse to support resale values then I’m damned if I will either and so will run it into the ground for next 10 years

Glad you did comment on the image problem Range Rovers have in London. I think the Range Rover Sport is even worse and would deter me from getting one. To be honest as a previous owner of a BMW 7 series years ago. The appeal of Audi, BMW, Merc, and RR has diminished considerably by the people they attract lately. Maybe it was all the cheap finance deals and endless vehicle line ups that have destroyed the prestige element of these brands.

Enjoyed the video and the chat. Like bring on a phone call with a car mate. Reckon the RS6, cool as it is, is actually the car you choose if you can only have ONE car, because it ticks many boxes, but ultimately is a bit of a compromise. Meanwhile the range rover would be comfy and easy to live with, esp if you have something else to blow the cobwebs out with at weekends.

Neither, both too big. Just cant park them, people bang them, expensive to run and for parts. Daily drivers you want a simple, reliable, smallish banger. These are not daily cars for most people. And a range rover is just the wrong image, no personality, just a nothing car, be a sheep, get a range rover However heel and toe 10/10

At that time w211 e63amg it was still in production. For me just a better looking better sounding car with much more character than this volkswagen. V10 does the job but just don't like the dashboard and generally the look of audi. Range Rover very nice and unreliable Suv. Do some test of e63amg v211 and e60 m5 pls. Cheers

Call yourselves car guys! A RR over a V10 wagon Give me the RS6 any day. And please get your facts right. The NA V10 in the S6 was a completely different engine and was a 5. 2, not the 5. 0 in the RS6, (which was actually more Audi than Lambo) and was only ever used in this RS6. It's a pretty special piece of kit.

You guys are so British and bias. Why would you advice people to take that Range over an Avant V10
If not for anything, the Audi will definitely be a collectors item if it isnt already. And you dont look like a toss driving it.
Do better with your reviews. Wagons drive much better than SUVs anyway

I'm enjoying the video but something is way off with your sound. I have a home cinema system which fires up as soon as the telly goes on and my sofa is shaking because of how much bass there is. I've had to turn the subwoofers off completely to continue watching. Just an FYI, enjoying the video.

As James suggested, comparing the 2013 RR may be compared better with the 2013 C7 RS6, which would have been an exceptional daily driver. The elephant in the room is price. Everybody seems to love the C7 as well and prices are steep more than a comparably aged RR
reply

Guys, you REALLY need to sort out the sound - I honestly don't know how more people aren't commenting on this, but then again, maybe they just gave up watching and moved on to something else (which I'm afraid, is what I'm about to do, after 2: 36 minutes.

Love this test! No question, money no object, the perfect daily is that Rover. Super comfy and still handsome. Nothing like sitting up high in traffic and V8 power. Perfect two car garage is a 911 and a full size Rover. Both icons of automotive history.
reply

I've had both and I agree with this test. The attributes the Audi has over the RR are not daily priorities. And I've never had an issue on reliability; regular servicing is all that's needed.

Which one is easier to push onto a trailer
Tbh the range rover, with no privacy glass and its original number plate does scream (quitely) not interested in showing off, I like what I like.

Was it intended to read nightmare daily These are both massive money pits. Even if money is no object, they’ll spend so much time being repaired that you’d barely be able to enjoy them!
reply

for me it will never be an suv, i've been in plenty, some very expensive, they all drive like boats and handle like crap and that without being actually more comfortable than a sedan or wagon.
reply

Won’t the Ranger break down for a daily driver Rather the Audi, especially with the slow incompetent useless drivers on the roads these days, need to get past them!
reply

Fabulous reviews as always. What I don't get is, if you genuinely love the car and want to drive it, why be so worried about what other people think of you in it
reply

RS6 and Range Rover are in my top ten, along with F1, Bugatti type 35, Ferrari F40, 355, 205 GTI, Audi S1 quattro, Ford RS 200, Aston Martin V8 vantage.
reply

well, First world problems. Anyways, in. case you go with range rover, you need two of tyhose, since one will always in the repair shop
reply

Anything but a Rangerover or indeed any Landrover.
When our last one was stolen we celebrated with champagne. Never again.
