I was an early adopter for the Mercedes A Class and got one of the first available from my local dealership. It was the top spec (at the time) A160 with the clutchless manual gearbox and slatted sliding sunroof in a gorgeous Blue metallic. Fantastic little car. Did plenty of long journeys in it and, because the rear seats could be easily removed, regularly used it as a van to carry furniture etc. from Ikea. Way ahead of it's time

i still dont get the love, just look at it, an anonymous more boring box you couldnt imagine. id much rather a 405 or 406, much nicer cars all round, though in the Uk we seem to love Ford for some reason, each to his own I suppose.

The Rover R8 was a Swiss army knife of a car. 3 door, 5 door, 4 door saloon, estate, coupe and cabriolet. Everything from a N/A diesel up to a 2litre turbo. Decent, if never fully sorted chassis too. Gave Ford a wake-up call.

Aah the Fiat Coupe 5cyl Turbo for me, best car I’ve had! Unbeatable GT around Europe, with impressive laptimes at the tracks. Bulletproof, didnt rust much, frugal, roomy/practical & great looker IMO. For not much money 2nd hand!

Ahhh the 1990s, halcyon days. I went from a Mk4 Escort into a Mk1 Mondeo (both company cars) and the difference was like night and day. My next company car was a Mondeo Mk2 which raised the game again.

I remember dad had a Cortina and then traded in for a new Mondeo mk1, it had electric windows, central locking and air conditioning, dad thought he won the pools

It was Lancia that told off Ford for calling the engines Zeta as they had the trademark to Latin character names, hence the rename to Zetec.

I wonder if Zeta would have survived on as an engine name and a trim level for as long as zetec if Lancia hadn’t intervened

The Mk1 Mondeo was great. Just a shame they got progressively less impressive and less reliable as the generations progressed.

12000 miles in a week is surely virtually impossible, unless you are on a race circuit with a dedicated team of mechanics.
