The Maserati MCXtrema is a super-exclusive track car. It might be loosely based on Maserati’s MC20 supercar but it’s more race car than supercar now: with a 730bhp variant of the Nettuno V6 engine, a stripped interior, carbonfibre everywhere, bespoke suspension and even its own air jacks. And yet there is no race series for this 936, 000 super-special car, which costs thousands to run every time it turns a wheel. It’s no wonder, then, that they only made 62 of them, and most of them immediately went into collections to barely see the light of day. Except for this one, whose extremely generous owner got in touch to ask if we’d like to have a go in his MCXtrema, during a track day organised by the wonderful charity Mission Motorsport. As you can imagine, we said yes please and thank you very much. So join Autocar’s Richard Lane as he gets to grips with a car that is close to a GT3 racing car in all but name. For more on the MCXtrema, and indeed all other Maeratis, join us at autocar. co. uk.

this cannot hold a candle to a Maserati MC12 GT1. This definitely not the most wild Maserati ever made. Then there's the unrestricted version, MC12 Versione Corse, which developed 750hp in the GT1 car. and only 12 were made. These were also track only, and were Masaerati's version of the fxx cars, but in a GT1 chassis.

Extremely neat but that engine still isn’t quite what they used to be. I build well-tuned hot Merak engines with huge 48IDA carburetors and they sound the business. What’s wild is both this new V6 and the old V6 are both odd fire. Modern component strength finally made odd fire V6 a concern of the past.

When such a car is given to you. You execute a proper video. Not a dash mounted camera that is facing the left portion of the car. How does the audience get a feel of how the car drives

absolutely hilarious, all that money and they still can't manage the wireless data transfer to the steering wheel. Hello 1970s curly cord.

It's a shame your cameras are such low frame rate that most of the 'dynamic' footage is blurry - what an amazing machine though
