Do winter tyres work?

All season tires = Bad comprimise, works in the summer. Dangerous in the winter.
Winter tires = A must for driving below 0 celcius
I dont even get why there is question if winter tires work, there is a huge difference, winter tires are made softer, so the snow sticks to the tire, wich gives you a huge amount of traction compared to the summer tires on snow, wich would only polish the snow.

Interesting video. Curios why you say it's much easier, because it's a manual? I have taken part in many offroad events around Europe including the fantastic -Csossiere Blanche- with our French friends. Because of disabilities I drive Automatics and find driving in all offroad and snow conditions much easier with the -Auto- box. would not go back to manual gearbox, even if I could. Thanks for sharing with us all.

I'm a great advocate of winter tyres but the inconsistencies in this video will only confuse people further. As well as the so-called identical BMWs as has already been pointed out by many, at one point he also refers to the tyres on the 1 Series as -all weather- but then later calls them -cold weather tyres-. Surprised that a respected publication like Autocar were so careless when making this video.

At least make the 1 series an automatic too, just make it a little more identical. We all know no matter what car or tyres you have on when it's a manual it WILL have better torque and make the all weather tyres respond better. Redo the test using 2 autos and then let's see how good you claim these tyres to be!

I dont get why they even make a video of this? all my cars have been rear wheel drive and have had winter tires in the winters, absolutly no problem. I just dont get it? come to the north part of the world like Sweden or Norway and you will see that winter tires work.

Well Mr Costorphine either your short sighted or just plain lying because those 2 cars are NOT as you say -completely identical BMW's-! Totally different cars totally different engines = Not a genuine comparison so go away and come back next time with 2 IDENTICAL cars.

-Do winter tyres work-? Well, we'll never learn from this video, because there were no winter tyres to be seen. So called -all weather- tyres are only a little better in the snow than summer tyres. Real winter tyres are in another world.

ha ha ha! OK, first you guys need to learn how to drive in snow--because then you actually could drive on al season tires without all that extra spin, and second, yeah--an all season and a winter tire are not the same thing.

Always use winter tires in the winter guys. Only people with lack of knowledge would drive on summertires in the winter. Imagine going downhill on slippery snow. ST wont stop at all. WT will eventually stop. Be safe friends.

Really? A 1 series and a 6 series? I wanted information not to find out that a heavy auto 6 series has a harder time than a lighter manual 1 series. Good grief what a pointless exercise.
