A new straight-six, front-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports car with a 50: 50 weight distribution, you say? Toyota's reinvented Supra has got all the hallmarks of a great sports coup-, hasn't it? Matt Prior drives a prototype to see if it goes like one too

Here's my question, what exactly is this car?
Here in America, Toyota is stancing to market the Supra as a muscle car. The problem is, if the Supra comes out around its estimated price of $60, 000 that's going to put it head to head with the Shelby GT350, and Corvette C7, which both embarrass the Supra in almost every way.
It's not a Sports car, because again it's too expensive compared to its rivals, (370z, MX5, GT86) and it doesn't have a manual transmission.
It's not a super car, because it simply doesn't have enough power. (keep in mind you can get a 2012 GTR or a BMW I8 for $60, 000)
The only place the Supra fits in is entry level GT couple, like the V6 Jag F type, which also starts around $60, 000.
But from my POV and the comments on this video, that straight up doesn't appeal to the enthusiasts of the original car? Yes the OG Supra was a GT car, but it was (A) much cheaper than its competitors in class. And (B) massive tune able into anything the owner wanted. Want a 1000HP + muscle car? no problem. Track munching race car? Totally possible. Make it a poor man's Aston Martin, that's what it was from stock more or less.
I guess that's what Toyota is hinting at, with all these different race car versions of the Supra, -look how tunable it is guys. - but that's of course with a blank check from Toyota.
Anyway, I'm just worried about this car, because Toyota doesn't even seem sure what it is. It's not a muscle car, it's not a sports car, it's just your standard entry level GT car. Is that what you want out of the Supra?

collaboration isnt a bad thing. in the real world companies come together because of the stiff competition from companies like general motors, vw etc. organizationss with multiple sub companies churning out mass products. you cant compete with a behemoth like vw on your own. you need collaboration to appeal to the masses. You think it was an easy decision for mr toyoda to put someone else's engine in their car? you can sit on toyota island make your own engine and fanboys be crying about something else. Bmw are a huge seller in europe and america. this way bmw can easily have supra on their forecourt it wont be a big deal for the used market. same with nissan renault mitsubishi. collaboration in a world that has no sympathy for you, you do what you have to. theirs rumours of nissan teaming up with mercedes. listen all this was caused by people like the ones in the comments abandoning Japanese cars to go for germans because of status. So go cry elsewhere. more and more collaboration are going to happen in future.

people who are hating the a90 supra, go to hell! how can even you know that this car hasn't the potential. have you ever driven an m3? in Mumbai there also a M3 which has 847 HP under it's hood that to from an small 3 ltr inline 6. this mk5 supra will be available with the robust zf auto which is one of the most reliable and perfect AT in modern times. and you guyzz are saying that it Will be a Flop. what. you are a prophet or you have borrowed the time stone from thanos?
sit tight and wait till the jan 2019
note that supra will be competing against the cayman so expect a healthy 400 HP and track focused agility from it.
cheers!

Seeing the car (and its rendering without the whole camo scheme) for the 1st time. I can't help but thinking about a -glorified- Z4. There is way too much BMW -genes- into that new model that cannibalize the whole Supra part. The engine acts and sounds like a regular BMW power plant, a far cry from the straight sixes Toyota used to produce in a not so distant past. The bodystyle lines are looking more european influenced than the original japanese stylistic cues found in the previous iterations. A very poor example of a joint partnership that definitely turns sour for the Japanese carmaker.

Not sure Toyota has -reinvented- much of this Supra! I'm not surprised, the GT86 was a failure so. Let's just try it now with a different partner. The success will be owned to BMW, if it has some. Typical for the Toyota/Lexus of the last 10+ years. How can they just give up such prior successes? The dream is officially dead.

What is it with people being obsessed with horsepower? Seriously the supra was not designed to be extremely fast. A real enthusiast will understand that there has to be a balance for handling and power. Yet most people who complain about hp have never driven car that has been perfectly balanced or a any car over 500hp.

I believe the chief mechanical engineer for the supra said a manual should be available in rhd, due to demand in Japan. It may come to the UK and to lhd if the customer base demands it, so everyone who wants one should let it known to toyota

People that complain about this car, saying that -it doesn't deserve to be called a Supra-, these people simply never understood what the Supra's spirit truely is.
Go back playing NFS with your 1000hp MK4

If you want a car comparable to the last gen Supra, your best bet is a Lexus LC500 or an LFA. However, we should wish this new Supra well. If it sells, that could mean Nissan will be forced to unveil a new SILVIA! (:

Not sure it-s a rival to the M2. The engine sounds like BMW-s B58 and probably shares the ZF gear box. It-s not all about the engine but that puts it in the same power band as the m240i.
