The Defender is absolutely a
4x4
Excellent off road capability is standard
If u need more off road ability, ( which most people don-t ) option the vehicle accordingly, and do mods to create a Defender to suit your specific requirements.
Which is what many owners are doing.
The fact that the Defender is also so refined on road, is a testament to the brilliance of LR, to create such a vehicle.
Huge range of Defenders are available.
Most of them will be sold to people who don-t go off road.
For them, it-s an SUV.
Because Defender has excellent comfort, safety, tech, and it-s a great daily driver, this is why it is proving to b such a popular vehicle worldwide.
Bronco and Wrangler are not as refined as Defender, as a daily driver.
They are aimed at a specific ( and huge ) portion of the SUV market in the USA.

I like the Defender, and the Bronco. Both are neat vehicles. I've read that road/wind noise isn't great in the Bronco no mater what, but it would likely have been improved here if this example had the factory removable hardtop rather than the (admittedly cool) soft top. I understand the circumstances that prevented this review from including some meaningful off-road time, but that's where both of these vehicles shine.

Can? People not making the distinction between 4x4s (something like the Bronco, SUVs (e. g. Range Rover) and crossovers (the vast majority of those so called -SUVs- on the market today) do my head in. Oh, I'd love if you compared the Defender with the Ford Explorer as well! You can get those in Europe, actually. The PHEV variant only, but it's something at least.

Yeah, you have some pretty understanding car owners or very presumptuous car sellers. There is no way I would allow a review of a vehicle that I paid to have imported by a journalist. So is the owner aware you are tooling around in their vehicle or is the importer taking money for a journalist vehicle?

That LR sure does need a warranty, my brothers a technician at Inchcape, these new Defenders are continuing the trend of unreliable JLR products built in the Midlands, the Scousers seem to get it right at Halewood with the Evoque and Disco Sport but the bigger stuff is junk.

Matt as always your review was to the point and as such very clear in the vehicles ultimate abilities. That is why I place a lot of faith in your reviews. I just wonder if JLR should have taken the opportunity to create a new segment. The PUV ( Plush Utility Vehicle?

Would have been good to explain that the Bronco can vary greatly based on the specification of the vehicle. There-s a million options and trims for them. The base will be the same but as a car journalist I would have mentioned it.

As an original Defender driver, I fully appreciate Matt's distinction between 4x4 and SUV. Happily, there's room for both in the market. Or there would be if Ford imported the Bronco to the UK.

It amuses me that the Bronco is called the Outer Banks model. Having holidayed there, my memory is that the Outer Banks are as flat as a pancake and the last place in the USA to need a 4X4.

If I wanted an off-roader, I'd still choose the wrangler over the bronco. Bronco is too big. If I wanted a commuter that can go off-road once in a while, Defender all day long.
