The all-new Lotus Emira is a big car for Lotus. For one, it's the end of something: the last petrol-powered sports car Lotus says it will make. And for two it's the start of something, as the first all-new model to be introduced since Geely took over Lotus five years ago. Like the Evora before it it's a mid-engined sports car with a 3. 5-litre supercharged V6 engine; here it makes 400bhp and drives through a six-speed manual gearbox. It'll do 0-62mph in 4. 3sec and has a 180mph top speed. But just how good is it? We've put it up against the benchmark mid-engined sports car to find out: a Porsche 718 Cayman GTS. This has a 4. 0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six cylinder engine making 394bhp. It will do 0-62mph in 4. 5sec and has a 182mph top speed.

To me, Lotus has been a complete disappointment ever since 2010. I don't know whether anyone remembers when Lotus unveiled 5 absolutely gorgeous concept cars at the Paris Motor Show in 2010 including: the Espirt, the Elan, the Elite, the Elise and the Eterne with a whole host of celebrities like Naomi Campbell, Brian May, Stephen Baldwin and Mickey Rouke. Rings a bell? That was when I thought wow Lotus is making beautiful cars again since the old Espirt as seen in the James Bond classic The Spy Who Loved Me. Just as I was getting excited, everything fell through into the abyss when then CEO Dany Bahar got fired after an internal investigation. That was the last time I thought about Lotus as a brand. Sure, they have been making track-oriented cars, but those are not on the same level.

Lotus has a lot of problems and challenges they need to overcome. I do not believe Emira will be the car to make them fully shine. Porsche simply has immense resources, know how, experience in developing and tuning that Lotus cannot keep up. Over time these differences can only grow larger unless Lotus gets even more money. Soon aero will run the show, and smaller companies will not be able to match it. Porsche makes best chasis, they can make their own engines and gearboxes, and Lotus is still behind. Tough to swallow given how much we all love Lotus.

Can't help thinking it's a better dressed Evora (and that's no bad thing) but something more is needed if it is to get ahead of the mass market competition. Let's hope there's more from the EVs if this assessment aligns with the forthcoming consensus. That said I'd happily own one in a few years once they've depreciated! ;)

Would go for the Porsche all day long. It's such a good chassis and since it's got the detuned 911 GT3 engine, it's my absolute favourite car in it's class. Porsche is also one of the few european car manufacturers, that still offers good manual gearbox solutions.

Well done Lotus for making a credible Cayman rival.
Huge missed opportunity for not making a Boxster rival.
I ll never buy a fixed roof sporty car.
It was the Boxster that helped to save Porsche, can lotus afford to ignore the convertible market?

Jethro out drove the dynamism of the Lotus on Angelsey ( track. Shame. For him Porker better. For me a very so so British driver and owner, the Emira. Makes you proud be British. Although we do all know a lot help here from a certain place in Asia.

My new GT4 is so soft and compliant on the road I wonder why everyone is so keen to twin test against the GTS, the GT4 is actually closer in price if you don't spend fortunes on unnecessary options, especially the sport pack Emira.

From the reviews I have seen so far about the lotus. It's not that great. It's a great step forward for lotus, not as good as the competition. The only thing outstanding about it is the look. A bit of a disappointment it seems.

Why on earth would you take a lotus over a Porsche? I mean you are literally paying the Chinese regime if you buy a lotus apart from the poor build quality and high price considering what you get and compared to competitors

I m a little confused, so which one do you prefer? I ve seen you review the Alpine and Cayman head to head and there you were much more enthusiastic. Yet in this, You didn t seem impressed with any of the cars
