Fore more videos visit: British motorists tend to run summer tyres on their cars all year round, regardless of the weather. However, as our exclusive comparison test shows, this can be very dangerous. We headed to Sweden to compare the performance of summer tyres with winter tyres on snow - and the results were quite shocking

I've driven a rear wheel drive car with 'summer tyres' though the winter more than once. I didn't die but I did have to drive like a granny on occasion and use common sense to determine when conditions were bad enough I shouldn't be driving. There is a lot to be said for driving to the conditions of the road, knowing you and your car's limits and preparing for bad weather. Of course winter tyres make a massive difference. I've driven in Scandinavia with them and you would barely know there is snow and ice on the road. But whether it is necessary here in the UK depends on a lot of factors. Most people don't bother going out when it's that bad in which case it really is pointless, but of course there is always some idiot overtaking everyone in a Merc which you'll see again in a ditch a few miles down the road. They're probably the only ones that need winter tyres.

I mean who's gonna keep changing tyres from winter to summer lol? price of tyres nowadays is insane then a garage to keep taking them all off and fitting them. not worth it tbh, personally think if you have enough knowledge and a few tricks up your sleeve you can manage winter just fine with normal tyres, plus who drives that fast in snow like that? sure you could argue winter tyres are much better and bla bla but unless your loaded who's actually going to spend money changing tyres over? i have managed in normal tyres in FWD and RWD just fine and now that i have a 4WD i'm more than fine.

so do you guys have/recommend a whole different set of wheels to change out? or just change the tyres themselves over each winter? in my mind i'd rather just change out 4 wheels with appropriate tyre, than 4 tyres on the same rims. not that i've ever had to do this or ever see myself in a position where i'd have to.

1: 53 unless this is some ABS effect that camera fps does not pick up right but it looks like the red car wheels are still free spinning and not braking hard as it should be during the test? With that said, NEVER run summer tires on freezing cold weather, get all weather or proper winter tyres!

if you fit winter tyres to your car inform your insurance company as it can be classed as a modification. my current insurer won't provide cover with winter tyres fitted unless i pay more. first winter in the highlands of scotland driving with summer tyres. wish me luck.

Since I got my drivers license/ first car in 1974 I never ever drove any car in winter without winter tires. Even if you pay more, just a minor dent would cost more to fix, not even thinking of injuries or fatal accidents. Not using winter tires just isn-t worth it!

January 15th (today) 9 degrees, January 16th may be 6 degrees. Some days above 7 degrees when the same nights are below. You can't predict which days will be below 7 degrees in UK. The answer is to use cross-climates unless you propose changing tyres daily!

Still 80% of UK people won't change the Tyres unless there is a law in place that makes us change to winter Tyres in October to March time. but I don't think it will happen

Forgot the most important test which stopped me from buying winter tyres. On dry pavement, summer tyres stop faster. Winter tyres are only for snow, nothing else.
reply

The thing is the snow comes down and gets cleared but the temperature stays low. So does the winter tyres perform better in cold temperatures or just the snow
