Porsche 718 Boxster review: 4 cylinders but is Porsche's roadster better than ever?

Porsche has been courting a fair bit of controversy of late. First it revealed that most of its legendary 911 models would get turbocharged engines, and now it-s dropped the bombshell that its mid-engined Boxster roadster is ditching its flat-sixes in favour of smaller four-cylinder -boxer- powerplants. Yet while Porsche fans are up in arms, the firm isn-t breaking any new ground. In fact, its first ever car, the 1948 356/1, had a mid-mounted flat-four, while the newcomer-s 718 model designation is a nod to the sixties racer that scored numerous victories and even spawned an F1 racer. So has this trip back to the future paid off for Porsche? Read more

looks like a world beater. i like how it sounds, i think it sounds better than the turbo 6 911 which has wheezy quality. obviously the NA engines sound the best, but the boxster is now the 718 and has its own identity. I think a 718 cayman will be quite the performer and will be the best drivers car of 2016. Porsche now gives you supercar performance at a reasonable price. The new 718 will do 0-60 in 3. 9 seconds with pdk and sport chrono for a reasonable 75K(forgetting the billion other options. The 911 is too damn expensive new. I think porsche is giving customers two distinctive cars at all price points. While you idiots are crying about a flat 4 consider that now a base cayman starts around 55K and will probably be as quick as the 2014 cayman S with more torque which will make it amazing deal. This aint no subaru.

Just do the research on the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing failure that Porsche was silent about with the Boxster. Complete engineering failure covered up by Porsche. Estimates are that the engine fails in almost 25% of all Boxsters. Read up on it and you will never buy a Boxster in your life, or even a Porsche for that matter. Porsche can't be trusted if they can't fess up to engineering flaws.

It actually is about as fast as the 911 Carrera, which accelerates from 0-60 mph in 3. 4 seconds (the standard 911 runs it in 4. 0 seconds. Car and Driver's instrumentation based testing of the 718 Cayman S PDK resulted in a 3. 6 second 0-60 mph run and a 12-second flat quarter mile. It has supercar handing and acceleration--what an awesome Deutsche Jet by Porsche!

yeah. the first Porsche was built decades ago. and people aren't just facepalming about the four cylinders. it's more about the forced induction and the loss of the need to rev it to the highest point anymore because that's not the point of forced induction. this is nothing like the 4 cylinder Porsches that exist in history not as contemporary purchases

newton meters? This is UK and nobody except probably you has a clue what a newton metre looks like, or even if the figure you quote is impressive or not. I Note that you talk about BHP, and not KW - why not? BTW, the first Porsche, just like its VW Beetle progenitor, was REAR-engined, not mid-engined.

I like that car. I was sceptical about 4 cylinder but this one sounds good and drives well to. PDK does excellent job however it is a bit jerky when just starting to drive. I wish paddles would be on steering column (now they are very small)

drove my father's new 981(2. 7) black edition with the original valves exhaust and PDK 2 days ago. there are so much emotions while driving which makes me addicted. It's a pity that Porsche drops off the flat 6 engines.

-Real Porsches only have 6 cylinders! - Porsches with flat-six engines: 911, 959, 914-6, Boxster, Cayman. Porsches with four cylinders: 356, 904, 550, 718, 912, 914, 924, 944, 968, 718 Boxster, 718 Cayman.

don't mention my 944T, just act like 914-4 is something special from VW mostly.
Dummies always screw front eng and hype a silly 914 rust bucket. 914-6 understand that, but others are so overated

Yes, yes Porsche has 4cil history, but if i could spend 80K Euro, for a Porsche i would like 6 cilinders. I think the -Subaru sound- is not convincing, the handling and looks are great.
