I had to replace the EV valve and my wife’s discovery II Thankfully it was in a convenient location so it wasn’t that bad a job but it was intermittent so every time I put a scan tool on it and test that it would work fine and I couldn’t find any kind of leak.
It’s been my experience that GMC owners get really pissy if you confuse their truck with a Chevy. Even though they come off the exact same assembly line using 90% of the exact same components. And they get even more pissy when you point that out.

I have to agree on GM gas tanks they sure seem to have problems with evap leaks and the lock ring area that holds the sending unit/pump and evap cannister. Seems like all GM gas tanks have that depression area of the gas tank and build up and hold ice and snow in cold weather and can crush the plastic tubings and top of the sending unit that is plastic. Even my 2001 GMC Sierra has had this problem with gas tank evap leaks, etc.

The rickety ladder is back. The viewers want to see the struggle is real when you drop a full gas tank. Just noticed that you're at 974K. When you hit 1M is that when you'll be saying, Got the lock ring at the local Napa Dealer. Now a sponsor. If you visit your friendly Napa dealer just tell them Eric O sent ya. Use ERICO TO SAVE 15% for all your online purchases. Now back to our show. Wow, times are a changing.

Morning Mr. and Mrs. O, comment for the Al Gore Rhythm, always appreciate following along your diag process. /edit to add, empty the reservoir on the harborfreight smoke machine. mix 50/50 distilled water/white vinegar and run it through. heating element might have some build up. any smoke machine benefits from this if it's not giving the smoke volume it once did

About rusty vehicles, is there any vehicle that seems to survive in your opinion in central NY If nothing can survive year around use then oh well. Maybe a topic too loaded to talk about. I lived in central Vermont for many years but never owned American iron. Had a Saab that needed an exhaust every two years but otherwise didn’t rust at all.

Great video - the corrosion up there is insane. When you always point out that a car is rusting out at 10 -15 years old it makes me cringe at the crap the state must be putting down on the roads. Appreciate the videos Eric, I learn something every time I watch them. Thanks for taking us along!
reply

Eric, that's a great summary of what's going on. Too bad it doesn't seem to get translated into a better to a better vehicle along the way. I don't think we've seen it all so just speaking for myself I'm going to keep on watching. Hope you're having a great day. Thanks for Sharing!

Even after repairs completed on the silverado
Same crap different name
It took close to $500 in parts and labour to adress evap but after 150 miles the evap code still remains
I dont know what more can be done
These domestic junks are money pits

I had to buy a decent cheap smoke machine. My mom's '02 impala had an intermittent high idle and no codes. I put the smoke to it and found it was leaking out of the top of the egr valve that I replaced 1 year prior. I replaced it, and it fixed the issue.

Can that filler neck be changed to a old school screw on cap Could you buy two necks one original to the car and one with a screw on cap. Then cut them up and weld them together to make one that fits the car but has a screw on cap

When you think about it, the evap emissions requirements are effectively a subsidy for auto mechanics because that crap breaks all the time and in states like the People's Republic it has to be functioning to be legally registered.
reply

Same thing just happened with my 2017 CR-V. Looking at the pump I thought salt or something had eaten away the plastic and caused it to crack but I think your explanation of rust jacking makes more sense. Thanks!

As a tech and an 06 GM owner myself, I think GM’s evap system design (of this vintage, if they have changed at all now) is the way every brand should do it. I’m talking to you Chrysler and Toyota.
reply

I would've liked to see the whole job. I don't remember seeing another one, doesn't mean I didn't watch it but hey I'm old and bored but I'm not about to go searching through ten years of videos.
reply

Evap seems to be a weak point amongst a lot of mechanics. I've had to teach everyone I work with how to diag them and I utilize your videos in that process. Another great video Eric. Easy one.
reply

Ill never get over how rusty vehicles get up there. Im 7 hrs east of you, in RI. On an island surrounded by saltwater. Our vehicles seem to rust out about half as fast. Our 2010s look like that.
reply

My family fleet has a lot of old GMs and they all spit evap codes. I'm gonna have to upgrade my diag equip and get/make something to diagnose these because they're difficult to find.
reply

Going through this now on a 2500HD. Tossed a solenoid at it a year ago when the code said minor leak that didn't fix it. Its going to be fun dropping the tank without a lift.
reply

Been using fog-machine fluid in my smoke machine. Cheap, works well, but also has an odor that my big-ole sniffer picks up on immediately. Good for sniffing out small leaks.
