Ive actually got an interesting story about chasing a lean condition in a 6 cyl 98 explorer. Caught fire and the extinguisher was used finally after years of it just being a show piece. If i remember right (i was being trained by an older brother at my dads shop) we determined an ignition wire arced sparking the brake clean and replaced em. Still missed and we ran out of time diagnosing. Shortly after, she sold the car to my dad who gave it to me because id been helping around the shop for no pay, just to learn. He likes that shit.
Anyway, now we had time to figure it out. Forgot to mention, no codes showed up. Just super low on power basically. Barely made it up some hills. After a few days straight working on it, my dad and brother decided the computer was the issue, sent it to ford i think to have it done. Turns out, the computer that was in it was for a 96 ranger or something like that. Well never know why it worked at all i think, but heck if that wasnt a head scratcher.

when I see this 171 code my first thought is. Throttle body, damn, time to hit the junk yard up for scrap parts lol that is 3 pice part on that unit can be costly 1body, 2 motor, 3 sensor oh and gasket too that part alone almost 200 bucks at autozone motor 78 bucks 33bucks for sensor for FORD 171 Mean you hope its a loose air hose lol that means you got luckly also could be a few things now if that don't fix it then my next move change the fuel filter tho sense I only have a cheap scaner tool it just gives me an idea of where to look. The fuel pump thought of course is in the back of my mind and of course no one like to change those thats about 300 bucks then of course the thought of a few other things pop in to mind like catalytic coverter pops into mind

In my Holden Commodore I thought that a leaky fuel cap may have caused a P0171 code since the Holdens fitted with the Chevrolet LS1 V8 engined car don't have a fuel pressure sensor fitted in Australia.
I checked the fuel pressure which was 50 PSI, it should be between 55-62 PSI, what I noticed is that when I checked the fuel volume (2 litres in 1 1/2 minutes-o. k) that there were air bubbles in the fuel so I'm going to replace the 35, 000 kilometre fuel filter first before worrying about the fuel pump unit because I just replaced it late last year so I'm worried about that.
The P0171 code is stored in the PCM & both fuel trim readings have been at 25%, accelerating the engine doesn't make a difference to fuel trim so it has to be a fuel issue!

Thanks for the great video! I am chasing same code on my rust free (FL truck) 97 F150 5. 8L. A few hundred miles on new engine and this code popped up. I just put a reman/ATK engine in, all new gaskets, new sensors, new O2 upstream sensors, new lower aluminum intake manifold, new plugs a few new vacuum hoses. (fixed leaky 4x4 circuit) Only thing not new were tested/matched injectors. After seeing your video, I'm thinking if I have a minor exhaust leak, it shouldn't be throwing code. I need to make a smoke machine to look at intake. Always something.

Comment on the bastard file name: bastard files are those that have single - cut teeth on the edge of the file (usually a single - cut file. I've seen them in all sizes, from 10to 18. The larger ones were used in the lumber mills for touching up and sharpening large circular ripping blades on the machine. I saw the large ones from my grandfather's saw mill in Portland Oregon, out west. The bastard cut allows one to get on the inside of the saw tooth when sharpening. They were commonly referred to as mill bastards.

Not sure if you will see this since this video is a few years old. Got a P0171 reading on my 2000 5. 4 f150. Did a smoke test and the only leak I can see is from the Idle Control Valve. Not a lot of info out there on this. One post I saw said the ICV is suppose to leak some. Is this true? Don't want to spend 50 and replace it for no reason. Thanks for your help and your videos. They have been super helpful.

I have same Vechile, first thing is i tried the smoke test, then the break cleaner test, Have replaced everything, from air filter to fuel filter, EGR valve to had injectors tested and cleaned, tried cleaning mass air flow, changed to new one, even changed gaskets on intake, still get code po171, can't find any exhaust leaks, also change 02 sensors, any other suggests

I have a 00 5. 4 L in the shop currently, same thing, 24% fuel trim bank 1. I smoke tested it and Im getting a leak out of the EGR, but it looks like a purge hole? It doesnt suck when running. I found one leaking hose already but it didnt fix it.

My truck gets a loud air intake sound (like a school bus or big rig) after truck is drivin for about 40 min, So if the air intake gaskets close as the truck gets warmer does that mean that my issue doesnt have to do with my intake?
