I totally agree with you on your rant about unqualified youth behind the counter. I had such and encounter with one of these Gems
at Pep Boys thirty so years ago when I needed a drivers side engine mount for a 1967 mustang. The young man looked it up and
first told me they didn't carry this item for a 289 engine (REALLY) then said Oh here is one for all 289 except Conventional )
I ask what conventional was and he said Look right here it says Conv. I then asked if that could be Convertable? to which the light bulb
came on over his head (Dimly) and he said Oh yeah that could be it. So I took the part home and struggled for 20 minutes under the car trying to
install it before realizing that wonderboy had given me the wrong part. At that point I called the local shop that knows every car on the planet and
when I tossed the engine mount on the counter the Jedi master said Oh that's for a 390 mustang and you need this one and magically produced the
correct part for a cheaper price. I went home and 5 minutes later had the car fixed and never went back to the land of the clueless. There are
some places that should not be staffed by the undertrained, auto parts stores and fast food drive through lines.

I just removed and reinstalled my harmonic balancer on my 2003 Ranger with the same motor as this sport Trac, the 4. 0 sohc. Have a couple comments that may help others. Napa's version of the rental fan clutch removal tool includes the needed 57mm and 36mm wrenches and works great. The bolt style wheel puller kit from harbor freight is 20 bucks and works great for this application. The kit even included the correct size bolts to thread into the pulley.
I don't have the fancy impact that fits inbetween the radiator and the pulley. To get the balancer bolt loose, I put a long breaker bar on the bolt and rested it on the passenger side frame rail. Activated the starter for just an instant and it broke loose real easy.
I also didn't know that the bolt is TTY and shouldn't be reused. My local parts stores didn't have any in stock. Make sure to get one before disassembling like I did.

I've been a Master mechanic for over 30 years. I bought a brand new 2005 Sport Trac 4. 0L from the dealer off the showroom floor. After about a hundred and ten thousand miles, I had weird issues. Let's just leave it at weird issues! After about a week of sweating the diagnostics and scratching my head that very same issue finally smacked me in the face. Don't sweat it brother, it's one of those one-in-a-million issues unique to the vehicle and/or engine combination.

I love it when you guys make mistakes because that's life under the hood. I my case working on production
machinery I make mistakes all the time but have learned from many. There is nothing worse than someone
that shows only successes as that is not a real life event. You Rock for your honesty and we can laugh together
on days like these. Take care and keep on doing what you do best.

So I have a question if that pulley slips a little bit on that rubber would that make that vehicle go dead and when you tried to crank it back sound like the timing is off and then after continuing to trying to crank it it may crank up and run for a little while. You can get in it and may an Drive it a mile or 5 miles and and it just go dead

You haven't lived until you have gone into autozone and you ask for ethylene glycol and they tell you they dont carry it. then they ask. what do you need that for. I had to leave. I did tell the manager who defended his employee saying. ummmm well he is kinda new. GAWD!

Don't beat yourself up Mr O, what matters is you did find the problem, went and got the parts, installed them and tested the install. All us thousands of fans know you're a pro and would never let a job go out the door haff-arsed done so pat yourself on the back.

Hey, think you may have given me a lead to an intermittent squeal on my 2000 F-150, 4. 2L. And oh, don't beat yourself up, only 2 kinds of people make no mistakes- those who do nothing and liars!
