we take a look at a Jeep Liberty 3. 7 that was purchased from an auction and then towed into the shop from a local dealer. You could get the engine to start on occasion but when you did it had a lot of mechanical engine noise and would not idle. Let's see what we find

Could it be the PCM? My Jeep is doing the same thing, I have a thought, the computer could be bad, throws all the sensors haywire then everything is wrong and misfires, wont start, then intermittently starts but wont run. I am considering a wiring harness and a brain transplant, what do you think Doc?
I have new motor all new sensors and distributor plus plus plus and new TPS, air idle, etc. SENSORS ARE ALL NEW,
No codes due to the replacement of all the parts and battery disconnect and new motor has like 10 breaking in miles only, its not a valve, or the timing.
maybe I should just push it off a cliff?
I already emptied every pocket, and borrowed from local transients.

I had an 04 Liberty, oil changed every 3k, three tune ups, 3 trans services and 3 cooling flushes in 124k miles. It lost oil pressure to the lifters but still showed good oil pressure, one of the cam followers falls off an exhaust valve. I then get the popping back up through the intake manifold so I did a complete top end overhaul and it ran great for 2 months then did the same thing again. Flushed the engine, got the lifters to pump back up and traded it in. Never did figure it out. Had read it might have had sludged up oil passages due to a poorly engineered ventilation system.

I knew a guy that had one of these and he replaced the fuel rails, don't know why he did that he just seemed to think that's what the problem with his liberty. He showed me the cell footage that his wife recorded with her cell, I guess he was proud of doing his own work. When he tried to start it there was a big bang and a fireball that came from the engine, turned out the right fuel rail blew clean off the engine. Clearly he had. No clue what he was doing. Lol

Pressure transducers for the scope are a game changer. Replaces 4 tools, compression gauge, vacuum gauge, leakdown tester and timing light. and that's just by using it for in cylinder testing! Dooesn't even include using it on the fuel rail, transmissions, engine oil, etc. Definitely a must have for advanced diagnostics, or even basic stuff. There are some vehicles that I use my scope, ignition pickup and pressure transducer to check the ignition timing.

What is the best and cheapest scan tool that will check obd1 I have a 95 Dodge ram 1500 4x4 5. 9 and I can't find anybody to be able to scan it because of it being obd1 and has the like six pin chrysler connection under the hood that nobody ever has. So what cheap scan tool can I use as I can't figure out how to clean my codes I can flash the codes by cycling the key three times but I want a scan tool to be able to connect to the truck.

It really is amazing how clearly you can see mechanical things happening with electronic test equipment when you learn how to use it and how much time it can save you. Especially if you notify the customer and they decide they're going to get rid of the car and now you have junk torn apart that you have to put back together versus just pulling some test leads off the vehicle.

Checking to see if my thought process is correct: If you would have pulled the spark plugs on cylinders 4 & 6 in the beginning when you did the relative compression test with the amp clamp, then theoretically there would be no pressure spikes on cylinders 1 & 3, correct? I think this may be an option for someone with a pico but no in cylinder pressure device.

Like jeeps sometimes do! LOL. You are not kidding. Thank you so much for your videos. This was great information regarding firing order, exhaust, and compression. I like to understand how it works. Working on my daughters 07 Commander with 202k miles. It has the 3. 7 like this liberty in the video. Nice addition to my Jeep videos.

One note if you don't have a WPS500 you can remove the plug from the companion cylinder and see if the current returns to normal on the high current cylinder. A bit fast since you have the relative compression already setup. Definitely cool for demonstration purposes.

I really like this diagnostic stuff. Really makes you think. Kind of like the Mike Rowe podcast, the way I heard it. Always reveals the answer at the end, but makes you wonder, until you hear a certain clue, and know what it is.
