I was once led down the rabbit hole by the ignition system, it was a Pontiac and the first time I was dealing with electronic ignition and not my car. car had died on the freeway, no unusual sounds, like throwing a rod, had gas, and with the air cleaner off you could see fuel being squirted into the carburetor. thought we had spark, wasn't much but I figured since we were working on it from the side of the road it was just because of bright sunlight. thinking was maybe we jumped a few teeth on the timing chain. started tearing things apart, got to it and it looked fine. scratching our heads we took the distributor cap off, had some build up around the connectors, cleaned that, then looked at the rotor. and noticed a pin hole right in the center under the contact arm. dang thing was sending most of the spark straight to ground via the distributor shaft. New rotor and it fired right up, wasted about 3 hours on the side of the road troubleshooting the wrong thing. That's why I like these videos, even if I don't have the same car, you teach very good principles for diagnosing that can be applied to any car.

The customer always knows best. or so they think. It is hard with the internet solving all your problems at the click of a mouse for customers to realise that not all us mechanics are trying to rip people off. If you are anything like me, you want to find the actual cause of the fault not just the fault itself. If the O2 sensors and Cats need replacement, the fault plug lead was probably the reason behind that.
I boggles my mind sometimes how some customers will argue with you that they know best. What we need to say is, 'Hey fella, if you know what's wrong and how to fix it, why did you bring it to me? ' Just sayin'

Customer goes to AutoZone, has codes read. Has a code for EGR insufficient flow. Customer took elsewhere to have repaired. Brought to me after money light came back on. Checked codes, now has EGR, no flow. She explained she already had it repaired. Had her pop the hood for me. I asked her to come have a look. The EGR was unplugged. I plugged it back in and cleared the code. Ten minutes, no charge. She couldn't believe it. I explained things happen. She thanked me and left. 20 minutes later, she was back. She went and bought me lunch. Being fair and honest will keep you fed, lol

Thanks, this is a new one for me. I have the habit of replacing the plugs, wires, rotor bug and cap on my 94 Toyota truck every 6 years with Toyota parts. Nothing but a sweet purring engine. High and dry in NM but time eventually murders anything rubber and the bug to cap post arcing in the cap erodes the posts. Scraping the bug and posts just leaves overly large gaps. The cat may be able to clean itself and clear the code in a short time now that one cylinder isn't dumping raw gas into it and tripping the code - if caught early enough that the cat isn't roasted.

My step dad had a '72 chevy pickup, with 56000 original miles and he bragged he hadn't gotten a tune-up yet, well he needed some lumber from town and on his way home he nearly did't make up a steep hill because of misfires, well I looked at it and said there's your problem, mice had chewed the insulation off the spark plug wires, odd though they did not like the smell of the carbon impregnated core, it was running without load on basically pieces of string, points, condenser, and wires and plugs and the thing had regained it's youth, man was he surprised.

Awesome video thanks for sharing. I think you are an honest fair Christian man for taking the time to look for the problems in this car. Even after the man told you not to. If the guy is like me. I panic and get super nervous when I put my car in the garage even for just a simple oil change. They always seem to find something wrong that I never even expected. I said it before and I will say it again. I truly wish I lived near you. There are no honest garages near me. If they are I can't find them, lol. I hope you have a blessed week.

Catalytic converters are what I call the mystery part just like the carburetors were on the older ones. The other shop would condemn the carburetor as the cause of some weird driveability problem and of course, we don't do that type of work. Check engine light on, CAT codes present, we don't do that type of work sounds awfully familiar. More often than not, the CAT's are perfectly fine. This video is a good one, every service tech should watch it.

The other shop would condemn the carburetor as the cause of some weird driveability problem and of course, we don't do that type of work. With me growing rather tired of customers thinking THEY have the answer, i would have either told them to find someone else to do the work, or simply fired THEIR parts cannon at it and been done.
Then IF they came back complaining, I would simply ask if they want it fixed correctly this time?
Yes, I'm THAT guy. You wanna tell me how to repair YOUR vehicle, buy your own tools or go somewhere else.

Tell me you didn't put the oxygen sensor and converters on. Tell me you told him about his plug wire. I've been watching your videos forever and amazed at your skill, sense of humor and ethics. Tell me you didn't just put the parts on and ruin my outlook. I thought there was still someone out here that cares. Answer me!
